Israel-based StartupBlink published its Global Startup Ecosystem Report for 2022.

According to the report Armenia has demonstrated a significant improvement by moving 5 spots up to be ranked at 60th globally. It continues to be 1st in the Caucasus region.

In 2022, Yerevan entered the top 250 city ranking globally. Yerevan has seen a major jump, improving by 38 spots to 244th globally. This increase pushed Yerevan up the ladder in Eastern Europe, where it is now ranked 19th, versus 29th in 2021.

In 2021, the tech sector in Armenia flourished, with new investments fueling growth.

The country’s first unicorn, Picsart, recently reached a US$1 billion valuation. Moreover, the Armenian startup scene has seen growth in terms of entrepreneurship and tech development.

A strong and successful Armenian diaspora is also supporting the Armenian economy, and several highly successful American entrepreneurs of Armenian origin, like Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian, are working to boost the local startup ecosystem.

Armenian startups are built to target the global market from inception due to the small market size of the country. Armenia has a population of only 3 million people, but offers a sizable amount of tech talent.

Additionally, the Armenian government does a great job of supporting tech startups, including tax incentives. To support foreign investment, Armenia established Free Economic Zones and full ownership among other incentives under the legal framework On Foreign Investments. During the past few years, Armenia made significant progress in reducing bureaucracy and corruption.

The top global 10 startup ecosystems are as follows:
1. United States
2. United Kingdom
3. Israel
4. Canada
5. Sweden
6. Germany
7. Singapore
8. Australia
9. France
10. China

Israel-based StartupBlink published its Global Startup Ecosystem Report for 2022. According to the report Armenia has demonstrated a significant improvement by moving 5 spots up to be ranked at 60th globally. It continues to be 1st in the Caucasus region.…
Exciting news! StartupBlink has just released its highly anticipated Global Startup Ecosystem Index report for 2023, and Armenia and Yerevan are making impressive strides!

1. Armenia and Yerevan's Steady Growth

In this year's report, Armenia has achieved yet another significant milestone, climbing three spots to secure the 57th position globally. Within Europe, Armenia stands tall at 35th place and continues to dominate as the top-ranked ecosystem in the Caucasus region.

Meanwhile, Yerevan has displayed an astonishing upward trajectory, leaping an impressive 23 spots to claim the 221st rank globally and an impressive 18th position in Eastern Europe. Compared to last year, Yerevan has made remarkable progress, having previously held the 244th spot globally and the 19th position in Eastern Europe.

2. Factors Fueling Armenia's Rise

Several key factors have contributed to Armenia's remarkable growth in the rankings:

- The thriving tech sector in Armenia is attracting new investments, acting as a catalyst for further growth.

- The unwavering support of the successful Armenian diaspora is bolstering the country's economy.

- Armenian startups are uniquely positioned to target the global market from their inception, driven by the necessity to expand beyond the country's small domestic market.

- The Armenian government has implemented various programs and incentives to provide robust support to its tech startups, including advantageous tax policies.

3. Key Global Trends

The report also highlights some noteworthy global trends over the past 12 months:

- Despite funding decline of over 30% in 2022, early-stage investments, particularly angel and seed investments, have demonstrated resilience.

- The Silicon Valley Bank faced a collapse, impacting over 50% of the venture capital firms in the United States, as reported by Crunchbase.

- Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly integrating into our lives, evident through groundbreaking applications like ChatGPT, Midjourney, and Lensa.

- Downturn in Metaverse and VR. Although the potential for extraordinary innovation is still there, the industry as a whole did not manage to offer solutions that will truly be integrated into the economy and create mass adoption of their technologies.

- Climate tech is experiencing a surge, despite some negative trends, as governments worldwide allocate substantial resources and incentives to facilitate a transition towards zero emissions.

- The global semiconductor industry is poised for tremendous growth, projected to reach $1 trillion in revenues by 2030, doubling its revenue over the decade, as reported in Deloitte's Semiconductor Industry Outlook 2023.

These global trends and Armenia's remarkable growth indicate areas for exploring opportunities. The future holds immense potential for innovation and growth.

πŸ“Š Armenia ranked #55 globally in the StartupBlink 2026 report.

Armenia's global position slipped one position compared to the previous year's report but, the ecosystem itself still grew at a healthy pace (+16.2%), which is above Europe’s average growth (+7.3%) and above many mature ecosystems in Western Europe.

Among former Soviet republics, Armenia ranks 6th following Baltics, Russia and Ukraine:

πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡ͺ Estonia #12
πŸ‡±πŸ‡Ή Lithuania #22
πŸ‡·πŸ‡Ί Russia #42
πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ Ukraine #43
πŸ‡±πŸ‡» Latvia #48
πŸ‡¦πŸ‡² Armenia #55
πŸ‡¬πŸ‡ͺ Georgia #66
πŸ‡°πŸ‡Ώ Kazakhstan #71
πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Ώ Uzbekistan #79
πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ώ Azerbaijan #81
πŸ‡²πŸ‡© Moldova #82
πŸ‡§πŸ‡Ύ Belarus #95

Some observations:

β€’ Armenia remains one of the strongest startup ecosystems in the region on a per-capita basis
β€’ The ecosystem still grew strongly (+16.2%) β€” above much of Europe
β€’ Armenia continues outperforming larger regional economies like Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan

Armenia grew β€œonly” +16.2%. This indicates Armenia may be entering a more mature phase while regional competitors are entering earlier acceleration cycles.

But there are also important signals:
β€’ Georgia (+78%), Moldova (+91.9%), and Uzbekistan (+227%) are accelerating very fast
β€’ The regional startup landscape is becoming significantly more competitive
β€’ Armenia still lacks enough global scaled breakout companies, deeper capital pools, and stronger international visibility

The challenge now is moving from a respected emerging ecosystem to producing globally dominant companies.

Enterprise Armenia and Science & Technology Angel Network (STAN) supported the development of the Armenia section of this year’s report.

Note:
β€’ Armenia’s current positioning likely does not yet reflect the impact of the multi-billion-dollar Firebird AI initiative
β€’ Much of Firebird AI’s ecosystem impact started materializing during 2026, while this report mainly reflects 2025 data
