In the 1980s, the spreadsheet was considered such a valuable tool that would make buying a computer just to run it worthwhile. The term coined to describe such an application was a killer app. Is there an equivalent for Red Hat OpenShift? When it comes to tools that boost the value of the platform as a whole, we need to look at Red Hat OpenShift operators. There are generally speaking 2 types of operators. Some install and run an app (e.g., a database or a message queue) on an OpenShift cluster for you, then keep managing it by watching resources and acting automatically as needed. Others teac

Ceph

Vulnerabilities are easy to count. Meaningful risk is harder to measure.Open source has become the foundation of modern software because it works. Shared innovation, transparent development, global communities, and broad reuse let software advance at a scale no single organization could achieve alone.Security is part of that model. Open source development makes code available for inspection. Researchers can test it. Communities can improve it. Fixes can benefit everyone who depends on the software. The scale that makes open source powerful also makes security more complex. Modern applications c

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) gateway is now generally available (GA) as part of the Red Hat Connectivity Link 1.5 release, and natively integrated into the Red Hat AI portfolio. This follows a successful technology preview, and expands Red Hat's enterprise AgentOps capabilities to govern AI agent tool traffic at scale. We've added new features, including gateway isolation, stateless session support, prompts and resources support, MCP guardrails, and security hardening to make it ready for production use.Gateway and MCP server isolationYou can cater to different teams and tenants in your or

If you're a platform engineer, you've likely lived this: your team has assembled a toolchain for CI/CD, monitoring, security scanning, GitOps, and networking. Each tool does its specific job well, but over time, you realize you’re spending more hours maintaining the integrations between those tools than helping developers ship code. That's the real cost of tool sprawl. Yes, it’s increased licensing fees, but it’s also additional vendor relationships, constant integration maintenance, and multiple login screens for different dashboards. When something breaks, what should be a quick fix ca

The patch was ready in days. It took months to ship. Why?I hear that question in nearly every customer conversation about vulnerability management. The honest answer is rarely “We didn’t know about it.” It’s “We knew, but getting it into production took longer than the exploit window.”That delay, the time between a patch’s release and it actually running in production across every exposed application, is one of the most overlooked metrics in managing enterprise risk. AI is collapsing time-to-exploit into hours, while many organizations still take 40 to 90 days to rebuild, validat

When large open weight models first captured attention, the industry was faced with a challenge. Powerful open models were becoming available, but technologists lacked an open inference serving system that could run them efficiently. Having spent years building inference engines for CPUs, my team and I redirected all of our energy toward the vLLM project. Together with the community, vLLM capabilities expanded to become the de facto inference server. Today the vLLM project, now part of the PyTorch foundation, has a vibrant community of companies and developers actively adding support for new m

The technologies that shape computing don't have to be built behind closed doors. Some of the most important foundations of modern software - from operating systems to cloud infrastructure - have grown through open source, where communities can collaborate, improve the technology, and build on shared foundations. AI has an opportunity to follow that path. The recent Linux Foundation research report, Navigating Open Source Software Development in the Generative AI Era, sponsored in part by Red Hat, offers useful evidence for thinking about what that foundation should look like. The research show

Deploying AI at the edge is both rewarding and challenging. In previous articles, you've seen how to optimize and package your edge AI models and how to execute them to fulfill common use case requirements at the edge, but there's more.In this article, we'll switch our focus from model and service architecture to the management questions that affect our edge AI use case once a model runs across thousands of devices. We'll answer questions such as: How do you know which version is running where? How do you update it without causing fleet-wide incidents? And how do you manage devices that are un

Chat, batch, and agentic traffic can run on the same graphics processing unit (GPU) without the chatbot waiting for the batch job to complete.
