We urge Google to remove the Messenger Max app from Google Play.
We are addressing Google on behalf of users in Russia, demanding that the company cease providing infrastructural support for the Messenger Max app and remove it from the Google Play Store.
The Messenger Max app is a state-backed application developed by the state-owned company VK and has direct links to Russian individuals sanctioned by the US and the EU, such as Vladimir Kiriyenko and Yuri Kovalchuk.
According to an independent technical analysis, the Messenger Max app exhibits spyware-like functionality and is being used by the Russian authorities to exert pressure, conduct surveillance, and strengthen censorship in connection with the ongoing war against Ukraine, which remains unpopular among many Russians, and the approaching parliamentary elections.
The continued distribution of Messenger Max may raise concerns under human rights accountability and sanctions frameworks, including the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act.
Apple has already removed the Messenger Max app from its App Store, and we urge Google to follow suit.
