Dear Mr. President,
Your statement yesterday drawing attention to the plight of 80 million Iranians, accurately recognizing them as the first victims of the world’s only theocracy was received as a positive step towards engaging the world’s best and most powerful ally against the clerical regime: The proud and courageous people of Iran!
However in the same breath, having referred to the historically unchallengeable Persian Gulf as the “Arabian Gulf” has aroused a highly sensitive nerve in the very same people who will never accept the slightest challenge to the territorial integrity of our nation, which for more than three millennia has been documented as Persia (or Iran), on every single map recorded in history. To this day, neither of your predecessors nor any other foreign leader has referred to the Persian Gulf in any other terms.
The Iranian people’s pride in their ancient and very rich civilization has been the common bond, keeping whole a multi-ethnic nation, for millennia. As proven throughout our storied history, it is the “Iranian” conviction that our heritage will ultimately prove to be the most valuable strategic asset against the clerical regime that remains in direct conflict with its citizenry.
Since its inception 38 years ago, recognizing the Persian civilization as its Achilles heel, Iran's clerical regime under the guise of its militant “Islamist” ideology has incessantly sought to erase and undermine references to our civilization. Instead, year after year and at every turn, it has been our heritage and history that has served as the rallying cry for our people as they manage to find ways to courageously defy and challenge the regime by celebrating, instead of burying our heritage.
Despite all the suffering and calamities perpetrated by the regime against the Iranian people and our neighbors in the Middle-East, as a united nation, we have resiliently stood in defense of our territorial integrity and the protection of our borders. While we appreciate the efforts of the United States Government in tackling this terrorist regime, we do expect its leaders and officials to appropriately refer to historically recorded geographic regions and bodies of water by their proper names. Your kind attention to this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Respectfully,
Reza Pahlavi
