New testimonies detail torture and abuse of Gazan detainees in Israeli jails, detention centres

Geneva – New testimonies received by Euro-Med Human Right Monitor from recently-released Palestinian detainees from the Gaza Strip, including women and children, detail their subjection to torture and ill-treatment by Israeli authorities. The rights organisation cited revelations of crimes such as forced nudity, sexual harassment, and threats of sexual torture, calling for urgent international action to stop these violations.

Testimonies from a group of recently-released detainees who spent varying lengths of time in Israeli jails and detention centres were provided to the Euro-Med Monitor team. These individuals confirmed that they were subjected to severe beatings, dog attacks, strip searches, and denial of food and bathroom access, among other cruel practices that amount to torture.

New policy paper: Israel’s policy of starvation in Gaza will have long-term effects, is causing famine

Geneva – Israel’s policy of starvation in the Gaza Strip will have long-term, irreversible effects, Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor said on Wednesday, after international experts predicted that the number of victims of starvation and related diseases may exceed the number of those killed directly during the Israeli genocide of Palestinians in the Strip, ongoing since October 2023.

A new policy paper issued by Euro-Med Monitor entitled “The Gaza Strip: A scene of genocide since 7 October and a potential famine zone on 7 February” examines the dire food situation in the Strip and the probable famine there, particularly in the enclave’s northern governorates. The policy paper was based primarily on reports issued by international organisations, most notably the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), a global initiative.

According to the Euro-Med report, the number of trucks carrying humanitarian aid that are permitted to enter the Gaza Strip per day, in the best-case scenario, is between 70 and 100, with two of those trucks going to the northern governorates. Prior to 7 October, the number of aid trucks entering the Gaza Strip daily was at least 500.

Israel attacks remaining medical infrastructure in the Gaza Strip, further reducing Palestinians’ chances of survival

Geneva - As it enters the fifth month of its genocidal war against the Gaza Strip, Israel has not stopped targeting what is left of the health system there and is sabotaging any chance it may have to save Palestinian lives by firing and bombarding hospitals, ambulances, and medical teams, Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor said in a statement issued Friday.

The rights organisation has documented several serious Israeli military attacks in the past few days which have disrupted the partial return of hospital services, particularly in Gaza City and the Strip’s northern regions. These attacks are part of a larger Israeli attack on the Gazan health sector, ongoing since 7 October 2023.

Detention of popular activist Khaled Al-Natour reflects Jordanian government’s policy of systematic abuse

Geneva - The recent arrest of activist Khaled Al-Natour, one of the leaders of a popular movement supporting the Palestinian cause, was denounced by Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor as further evidence of the Jordanian government’s policy of systematic abuse.

The measure also confirms the Jordanian authorities’ arbitrary use of the country’s notorious cybercrime law, which restricts basic freedoms, freedom of speech, and peaceful assembly, Euro-Med Monitor added.

Al-Natour was arrested last night, on Thursday 8 February, just before a public demonstration in favour of Palestinians and against a bridge that is reportedly transporting goods from Jordan to Israel. The demonstration was scheduled for Friday at the Sheikh Hussein (or Jordan River) crossing on the Jordanian-Israeli border.

Fifteen days after ICJ ruling, Israel’s genocide in Gaza Strip continues on the same scale

Geneva - Fifteen days after the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered Israel to take all possible measures to prevent the crime of genocide against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip, and to take immediate steps to ensure humanitarian aid to Palestinian civilians there, Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor asserted that the Israeli army has maintained its rate of killing civilians, depriving them of their most basic human rights, besieging them, and starving them.

In defiance of the ruling of the world’s highest court and in violation of its own international obligations, including international law and principles, Israel persists in committing egregious violations that amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity, including genocide against the Palestinian people.

Gaza: Israel intensifies premeditated murder and sniper attacks against Palestinian civilians

Geneva - The Israeli army has escalated its premeditated murders, extrajudicial executions and judicial killings against Palestinian civilians through direct targeting with snipers and drones in various regions of the Gaza Strip, as part of its genocidal war, ongoing since 7 October, said Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor.

According to Euro-Med Monitor, Israel is killing Palestinians on a large scale through artillery and aerial strikes and by speeding up the execution of extrajudicial killings. These actions amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity under the Rome Statute Basic Law of the International Criminal Court.

Gaza: Initial findings show Israeli army purposefully kills a child, uses an American-made missile to target her rescue crew

Geneva - According to preliminary investigations conducted by Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor and testimonies it has collected, a five-year-old Palestinian girl, Hind Rajab, and her relatives were killed in a planned execution carried out by the Israeli army in Gaza City in broad daylight.

Hind and five of her family members were riding in a civilian car in the Tal al-Hawa neighbourhood, in the southwestern part of Gaza City, on Monday, 29 January, at around 5 pm, when they were exposed to direct and repeated fire from the Israeli army, according to Euro-Med Monitor.

“They brought Israeli civilians to watch our nude torture”: IDF torture of Palestinian prisoners is turned into entertainment for Israeli viewers

Geneva - The Israeli army introduced groups of Israeli civilians into detention centres and prisons holding Palestinian prisoners and detainees from the Gaza Strip, permitting the civilians to witness torture crimes against the detainees, with many allowed to film them on their own phones.

Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor received shocking testimonies from recently released Palestinian prisoners and detainees, in which they reported that the Israeli army invited a number of Israeli civilians during their interrogation sessions to witness torture and inhumane treatment, to which they were deliberately subjected in the presence of the civilians.

Gaza: Israel targets Palestinian civilians trying to access communications and internet services

Geneva - Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor has documented the Israeli army deliberately killing Palestinian civilians, including journalists, as they attempted to access communications and internet services to communicate with their families or employers, by targeting them with sniper or drone attacks in various areas of the Gaza Strip.

At least seven civilians have been killed in the North Gaza Governorate in less than a week after they were directly targeted by Israeli army drones in the Al-Bashir area of Tal Al-Zaatar in Jabalia Camp. The victims were attempting to access internet services to communicate with their families and relatives.

South Africa’s request to ICJ to prevent an unprecedented massacre in Rafah is welcomed by Euro-Med Monitor

Geneva - South Africa’s 12 February request to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) concerning Israel’s decision to extend its military operations in Rafah is welcomed by Euro-Med Monitor, the rights group said in a statement on Wednesday. Rafah is the last remaining shelter for displaced people and survivors of Israel’s ongoing genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, the group noted.

Euro-Med Monitor emphasised the significance of the request, which South Africa made as part of its reaction to the horrific events unfolding in the Strip, particularly in the governorate of Rafah, which was home to roughly 280,000 Palestinians prior to the current Israeli attacks. Today, over 1.4 million people, or more than half of the Gaza Strip's population, are living in Rafah Governorate. The majority of these people are children, and they came to Rafah from all over the Strip in response to military evacuation orders from Israel.

The Israeli military attacks against Rafah have already begun, Euro-Med Monitor warned, and include killing, starvation, and deprivation of health services. Israel’s army has killed about 280 people in Rafah—including about 155 women and children—following the issuance of the ICJ’s decision on 26 January, which acknowledged that Israel has violated its obligations under the Genocide Convention. Since then, the Israeli army has completely or partially destroyed about 220 housing units in the Gaza Strip. Furthermore, the dire humanitarian needs of the Palestinian people in Rafah Governorate have not been met.

Israel’s military assaults against civilians in Lebanon have increased, warns Euro-Med Monitor

Beirut - The Israeli army has expanded its military attacks in Lebanon, warned Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, citing Israel’s systematic and deliberate targeting of civilians there, which have resulted in dozens of casualties.

The escalation in Israeli attacks comes amid increased tensions along Israel’s southern border with Lebanon since 8 October 2023, coinciding with the crime of genocide committed by Israel in the Gaza Strip, said Euro-Med Monitor.

Israel’s demolition of educational institutions, cultural objects in Gaza is additional manifestation of genocide

Geneva - The Israeli army’s deliberate and pervasive targeting of educational institutions and cultural objects in the Gaza Strip is an additional manifestation of the ongoing crime of genocide that it has been committing since 7 October 2023, Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor said.

The current Israeli military attacks on the Gaza Strip have completely disrupted the educational process in all universities and colleges there, according to Euro-Med Monitor. Three university presidents have been killed in since 7 October, along with more than 95 university deans and professors; 68 of them held professor’s degrees. Meanwhile, 88,000 students have been deprived of receiving their university education and 555 students who were granted international scholarships have not been able to travel abroad due to the violence.

Migrant Suicide Crisis: Exposing Europe's Deadly Detention Policies

Michela Pugliese

In the shadows of Europe's southern shores, where the spotlight often dims on the human plight of arrivals, lies a harrowing reality obscured by bureaucracy and indifference.

On a chilling Saturday night, a young boy ended his life within the confines of Italy’s Pre-Removal Detention Center, Ponte Galeria, just outside Rome. Ousmane Sylla, barely 22, etched his final thoughts with the ash of a cigarette, drawing his own face as a prove of existence, yearning for a homeland and a mother's embrace. His story, from a lone minor's arrival six years prior to the haunting echo of suicide, epitomizes a system fraught with institutionalized brutality and despair. As his final words fade against the cell's cold walls of a European detention center, his story illuminates the dark truth of a migrant's existence – a narrative of neglect, confinement, and ultimately, a plea for humanity in the face of bureaucratic callousness.

Gaza: Israel systematically uses quadcopters to kill Palestinians from a close distance

Geneva - As part of its genocide against the Gaza Strip that has been ongoing since 7 October 2023, the Israeli army has been using small drones (or quadcopters) to fire directly at Palestinians, killing and injuring many of them, Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor has documented.

Israel’s army has increased its use of electronic-controlled quadcopters—which were previously restricted to use for intelligence purposes—for killing and injuring Palestinians. The Israeli army has escalated its premeditated murders, extrajudicial executions, and judicial killings against Palestinian civilians through direct targeting with snipers and drones in various regions of the Gaza Strip, in addition to aerial and artillery bombardment of residential areas, Euro-Med Monitor said.

Statement of UN experts on Israel’s violations against Palestinian women, girls is welcomed by Euro-Med Monitor

Geneva - The recent statement by United Nations experts on Israel’s flagrant human rights violations of Palestinian women and girls in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank was welcomed by Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor. The rights group emphasised the significance of the statement given the Israeli genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, ongoing since 7 October 2023.

The UN experts' statement should be adopted as an additional document to hold Israel responsible for its violations against Palestinian civilians, stressed Euro-Med Monitor. This is especially important as the International Court of Justice is deliberating over South Africa’s lawsuit, which accuses Israel of committing genocide in the Gaza Strip.

Palestinian women and girls have reportedly been arbitrarily executed in Gaza, according to the UN experts’ statement. Women are often executed together with family members, including their children: “We are shocked by reports of the deliberate targeting and extrajudicial killing of Palestinian women and children in places where they sought refuge, or while fleeing,” the statement reads.

UN Humanitarian Coordinator must speak up about famine in Northern Gaza Strip and Gaza City.

Palestinian territory – Euro-Med Monitor expresses deep concern over the silence of the United Nations Humanitarian and Reconstruction Coordinator for Gaza, Ms. Sigrid Kaag, and her apparent inattention to the catastrophic situation unfolding in the Northern Gaza Strip and Gaza City.

Despite alarming reports of famine, high acute food insecurity, and escalating malnutrition among children, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and other vulnerable populations across the Strip, Ms. Kaag has not exerted sufficient pressure on the international community to bring attention to and address the dire humanitarian crisis.

As conflict enters its 10th month, Sudan is expected to see greatest displacement wave, number of casualties yet

Geneva - Citing the tragic worsening of humanitarian conditions and the international community’s failure to protect civilians, which has resulted in horrific human losses and the largest waves of internal displacement in modern history, Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor called for attention to be given to the bloody conflict in Sudan, which is heading into its 10th month.

Euro-Med Monitor emphasised that immediate action must be taken by all international parties to end to the ongoing conflict in Sudan. Approximately 10,700,000 people have been forced to flee their homes due to the dire humanitarian situation and the destruction of essential infrastructure, such as roads, hospitals, medical facilities, and schools, as well as power, water, and communications services. Of these, approximately nine million people have been internally displaced, while 1,700,000 have sought refuge in neighbouring countries.

ICJ member states should cut political and military ties with Israel for violating ruling on Gaza genocide

Geneva - in a statement issued Saturday, Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor called on member states of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to cut off all forms of political, economic, and military relations with Israel, due to its flagrant violation of the ICJ decision that ordered Israel to take all steps within its power to prevent genocidal acts in its war on Gaza.

Over the course of the four weeks since the ICJ decision, as part of monitoring South Africa’s lawsuit against Israel for violating its obligations under the Genocide Convention, Euro-Med Monitor has continued to document ongoing Israeli violations during its war on the Gaza Strip since 7 October 2023.
