Following death of three patients, concerns raised about Israeli detention of medical personnel at Al-Shifa Medical Complex

Palestinian Territory - Horrific testimonies have been received by Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor regarding the slow death faced by dozens of sick and injured Palestinians at Gaza City’s Al-Shifa Medical Complex. The hospital has been the target of a massive military operation by the Israeli army for the fourth day in a row now.

According to the testimonies, the Israeli army has confined all doctors and nurses in an unknown location inside Al-Shifa Complex in an effort to prevent them from carrying out their duties. Meanwhile, the sick and injured have been denied access to medical treatment and medication, resulting in the deaths of at least three patients in the past few hours.

"I and 150 patients are in one room inside the hospital. Our wounds are severe and have started to get infected, and there are only 3 nurses who can't do much for us. The soldiers took a nurse for interrogation and killed him, leaving us without food except very small amounts that are not enough for us."

Tunisia: Government’s repression escalates, targeting freedoms and peaceful assembly

Geneva - Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor expresses deep concern over the dangerous expansion of government repression in Tunisia, aimed at consolidating the ban on public freedoms and restricting various forms of peaceful assembly, whether on political or livelihood-related issues.

The Tunisian authorities continue their repressive measures, extending the deteriorating human rights situation in the country since 2021, when President Kais Said imposed "exceptional" measures, such as dissolving the elected parliament and isolating the government as "necessary steps to save Tunisia from years of chaos," according to a previous statement by the president.

Report: Israel continues to violate ICJ ruling on Gaza

Geneva – Over the course of the two months that followed the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling, Israel did not abide by the order and continued to commit genocide against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip. The genocide has been ongoing since 7 October 2023, amid a total lack of accountability and a complete international failure to protect the Palestinian people from the crime.

A newly released report by Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor titled “Two Months after the International Court of Justice’s Ruling on Gaza: Escalation in Genocide and Absence of Accountability” contains documentation of Israel’s ongoing acts of genocide against the Palestinian people in the Strip. The report examines Israel’s lack of response to the Court’s ruling, which ordered Israel to take six provisional measures.

After surviving Israel’s bombardment of Gaza, Palestinians are being killed by disorderly entry of international aid

Given the Israeli crime of genocide that has been ongoing since 7 October 2023, the international community must act quickly to determine appropriate mechanisms to ensure that humanitarian supplies reach the hungry and impoverished in a way that preserves their dignity and lives. This is especially important in light of repeated casualties in Gaza City and the Strip’s north that have been brought on by the dropping of supplies from planes or trucks without providing insurance to secure recipients’ safety.

New ICJ ruling ordering ‘unhindered’ aid ‘at scale’ for Gaza is welcomed by Euro-Med Monitor

Palestinian Territory - New provisional measures issued today by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) are welcomed by Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor. The ICJ has stated that Israel must take all necessary and effective measures to ensure, without delay, and in full cooperation with the United Nations, “the unhindered provision at scale by all concerned of urgently needed basic services and humanitarian assistance” to Palestinians throughout the Gaza Strip.

The fresh ICJ order observes that Palestinians in Gaza are no longer facing only the risk of famine, but that famine is setting in, and that the pre-January catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Strip has further deteriorated. The Court says that its earlier orders did not fully address the consequences arising from the changes in the situation in the Gaza Strip.

Al-Shifa Medical Complex Witnesses One of the Largest Massacres in Palestinian History

Palestinian Territory - The Israeli army carried out a massive, shockingly horrific military operation in Al-Shifa Medical Complex in Gaza City over the course of the past two weeks, indiscriminately targeting and attacking Palestinians regardless of their civilian status, professional standing, gender, age, or health condition.

Though the exact number of casualties from the atrocity is still unknown, preliminary reports suggest that over 1,500 Palestinians have been killed, injured, or are reported missing as a result of the massacre at Al-Shifa, with women and children making up half of the casualties. Euro-Med Monitor is able to confirm from its initial investigation and testimonies that hundreds of dead bodies, including some burned, and others with their heads and limbs severed, have been discovered both inside Al-Shifa Medical Complex and in the hospital’s surrounding area.

Euro-Med Monitor to UNHRC: Address Israel’s violations of ICJ provisional measures

Geneva - Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor and Youth for the SGDs convened a crucial event at the United Nations Human Rights Council last week, titled “Examining Israel’s non-compliance with the ICJ provisional measures”. The event brought together experts and advocates to shed light on the ongoing Israeli violations of international law and human rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

Balakrishnan Rajagopal, UN Special Rapporteur on the right to housing, highlighted the shortcomings of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling, particularly regarding Israel’s claims of self-defense and the threshold for defining genocide. He expressed disappointment in the vagueness of the provisional measures and emphasised the urgent need for concrete actions to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Gaza: Al-Shifa Medical Complex massacre provides proof that the Israeli army engaged in full-fledged crimes

Palestinian Territory - The Israeli massacre of Palestinians in Gaza City’s Al-Shifa Medical Complex and its environs, the consequences of which are still unfolding almost two weeks later, demonstrates that the army committed complete and self-evident war crimes and crimes against humanity. These crimes include carrying out killings and unlawful executions of civilians and attempting to conceal evidence by burying victims’ bodies and even disfiguring them in the hospital courtyard.

Members of the Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor field team were present inside Al-Shifa Medical Complex during the Israeli army’s attack and its aftermath. About a week after the end of the military operation, during the recovery of dozens of victims’ remains, Euro-Med Monitor documented horrific scenes of body parts strewn on the ground as well as human remains inside a large pit dug by Israeli forces in the courtyard of one of Al-Shifa’s hospitals.

13,000 Palestinians reportedly missing in the Gaza Strip

Palestinian Territory - Urgent international action is needed to set up special mechanisms and specialised teams to remove debris from homes and buildings that Israel’s army has bombed, rescue those trapped alive under the rubble, and retrieve the thousands of dead bodies stuck under it since the genocide began on 7 October 2023.

Decisive international pressure on Israel is necessary to facilitate the labour of the individuals and crews working to remove this rubble, including civil defense crews. Pressure must also be put on Israel to release information on the fate of the thousands of Palestinian prisoners and detainees from the Gaza Strip who are being held by Israeli army forces, plus those who have been victims of murder, unlawful execution, and enforced disappearance in Israeli prisons and detention centres.

Amid catastrophic levels of acute food insecurity in Gaza, Israel still preventing access to life-saving supplies

Palestinian Territory - Israel continues to obstruct the entry and distribution of basic humanitarian supplies into the Gaza Strip, especially the Gaza City and North Gaza governorates, threatening to exacerbate and deepen the widespread famine there. These two governorates house at least 300,000 people, according to United Nations estimates.

Israel’s restriction of humanitarian access into the Gaza Strip, particularly the Strip’s northern parts, and its impeding the timely delivery of life-saving food supplies is drastically worsening the already-dire food insecurity faced by the Palestinian population there. This puts them at risk of death from starvation, particularly given the rise in the number of children dying from acute malnutrition, hunger, and related diseases—28 children have died from hunger and malnutrition alone.

Israel keeps up its crimes of forced displacement, threatening to kill those who return home

Geneva - The Israeli army has targeted thousands of Palestinians who it had forcibly displaced, preventing them from going back to their areas of residence in the northern Gaza Strip by using live ammunition and artillery shells. This has resulted in dozens of deaths and injuries, including women and children, and forced the remaining Palestinians to return to their places of displacement.

The Israeli army deliberately attacked thousands of Palestinian civilians on Sunday, killing and wounding dozens of them, and continuing its crime of forced displacement by preventing civilians it had previously forced to evacuate, including women and children, from crossing from the centre and south of the Gaza Strip into their areas of residence in the northern regions, despite the end of hostilities in most of these regions. These actions may be considered crimes against humanity and war crimes.

Israeli army broadcasts intimidating sounds to lure, kill, and forcibly displace civilians in the Nuseirat camp

Geneva - As part of its ongoing genocide, which started on 7 October 2023, the Israeli army is using new disturbing techniques to intimidate, lure, and target Palestinian civilians in the central Gaza Strip’s Nuseirat refugee camp.

Testimonies from camp residents, which were provided to the Euro-Med Monitor team, confirm that the sound of women screaming and babies crying was heard late at night on both Sunday and Monday. When some of the residents went out to investigate and tried to help, they were shot at by Israeli quadcopter drones. The sounds they had heard were in fact recordings played by the Israeli drones, with the intent of forcing the camp’s residents out into the streets, where they could be easily targeted by snipers and other weaponry.
