The Iranian regime’s decision to completely shut down internet access inside Iran is not merely an act of internal control. It is part of a broader machinery of censorship and propaganda designed to manipulate the narrative presented to the world.
When millions of Iranians are cut off from the global internet, the regime gains the ability to spread fabricated stories without being challenged by the very people who witness events on the ground. In an information blackout, the voices of ordinary citizens are silenced while the state’s propaganda becomes the only narrative reaching international audiences.

A clear example was the case of the bombing of a girls’ school, which was immediately blamed on foreign forces. Yet many Iranians understand that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has repeatedly used civilian suffering as a propaganda instrument, exploiting tragic events to shape international opinion and demonize its adversaries.
If the Iranian people had unrestricted access to the internet, the truth would emerge in real time. Citizens would share videos, images, and firsthand accounts that expose what truly happened. Millions of eyewitnesses connected to the global network would make it far more difficult for the regime to manufacture narratives or manipulate world opinion.

For this reason, helping Iranians maintain access to the internet is not only a humanitarian measure in defense of free expression. It is also strategically beneficial for the United States and the international community. When the Iranian people can communicate freely with the world, ayatollah's propaganda loses its power.

Free internet means transparency.
And transparency is the greatest enemy of authoritarian propaganda.
