A new Pew Research Center survey finds that the main reason people regularly go to church, synagogue, mosque or another house of worship is an obvious one: to feel closer to God. But the things that keep people away from religious services are more complicated.
Among those who attend no more than a few times a year, about three-in-ten say they do not go to religious services for a simple reason: They are not believers. But a much larger share stay away not because of a lack of faith, but for other reasons. This includes many people who say one very important reason they don’t regularly attend church is that they practice their faith in other ways.

An invitation to a distinguished Muslim scholar to preach at a eucharist service in an Oxford church has triggered complaints from traditionalists.
Monawar Hussain, Muslim tutor at Eton College and the founder of the Oxford Foundation, delivered a sermon at the University Church of St Mary the Virgin, following a request from Oxford University’s vice-chancellor, Louise Richardson.
The diocese of Oxford has received 12 complaints about the sermon, only three of which come from the local area.
In a statement endorsed by the university, the diocese said: “Monawar is not the first person from another faith community to be invited to preach the university sermon. ♦️ Abstract Submission Deadline: December 30, 2018
The organizing committee of the McGill Institute of Islamic Studies Graduate Student Symposium welcomes abstract submissions to their ninth annual symposium, to be held on April 4-5, 2019 at McGill University.
The aim is to provide an opportunity for graduate students based in various parts of the world and approaching the study of Islamicate thought and life across time and space through a multiplicity of disciplinary and methodological approaches to share their work with the Institute’s faculty and students in an atmosphere of constructive and supportive criticism.
The symposium’s themes include but are not limited to:
▪️theology, philosophy, mysticism, and jurisprudence
▪️history, political science, and anthropology
▪️Urdu, Arabic, Persian, and Turkish literature
