Government Official Reports Arrest of More Than 1,500 Citizens in Crackdown on Protests in Gilan
According to official statements by the provincial police commander of Gilan, more than 1,500 citizens have been arrested during security forces’ response to public protests in the province. The official did not provide clear or detailed information regarding the identities of those detained, their places of detention, or their legal status. He further claimed that 50 individuals described as “leaders” had been arrested and referred to protesters using broad and accusatory labels such as “seditionists” and “vandals.”
Following these mass arrests, families of detainees are facing a situation marked by uncertainty and serious concern. Reports indicate that many families have no information about the whereabouts of their relatives, their health conditions, access to legal counsel, or even the charges brought against them. Relevant authorities have reportedly failed to provide transparent or timely responses. This situation is unfolding amid communication restrictions and limited access to information, which significantly impede independent monitoring and timely documentation.
Human rights observers warn that the systematic use of vague and security-oriented labels to describe protesters risks facilitating widespread violations of fundamental rights, including the right to a fair trial and protection against arbitrary detention. If this pattern continues, the need for independent oversight, transparency, and international action to ensure accountability becomes increasingly urgent.

Khamenei Admits “Thousands” Killed in Recent Protests
In a speech delivered today to a group of supporters, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei acknowledged that “several thousand people” were killed during the recent nationwide protests. Throughout his remarks, he repeatedly referred to protesters using terms such as “sedition” and “seditionists,” and adopted a threatening tone, stating that the Islamic Republic would not “forgive domestic and international criminals.” He emphasized the need for firm action by security and judicial institutions against protesters.
Khamenei also blamed the protests on “foreign enemies” without presenting specific evidence, claiming that U.S. President Donald Trump was responsible for what he described as interference in Iran’s internal affairs. Human rights observers note that these statements avoid accountability for the large-scale killing of civilians and instead reinforce a security-driven narrative aimed at justifying the continued repression of protests.

Islamic Republic Judiciary Spokesperson: Harshest Punishments to Be Imposed on Protesters
The Islamic Republic judiciary spokesperson announced that the “harshest Islamic punishments” will be imposed on individuals detained during the protests. Asghar Jahangir stated that actions observed in the recent demonstrations constitute crimes, and those whose conduct is classified by authorities as mohareb (accused of moharebeh, the Islamic offense of “waging war against God”) would face extremely severe judicial sentences—including punishments that can carry the death penalty under Iran's Islamic Penal Code. He further emphasized that cases involving detained protesters would be processed rapidly, without delay, and with maximum severity.
He also claimed—without presenting evidence—that some detainees had links to Mossad, and warned that the response to those who called for protests would be punitive and uncompromising.
These remarks follow recent statements by other judicial officials, including the Tehran prosecutor, who rejected claims that executions of protesters had been halted and reiterated that the response would be decisive, deterrent, and forceful. Human rights observers warn that threats of extreme punishment and accelerated judicial proceedings raise serious concerns regarding violations of the right to a fair trial and the use of capital or other cruel punishments against protesters.
Human rights observers further caution that the current climate bears troubling similarities to the final phase of the Iran–Iraq war, when—following the Mojahedin-e Khalq’s Operation Forough Javidan and the state’s Operation Mersad—thousands of political prisoners were executed in the summer of 1988. Observers warn that, amid escalating tensions between Iran and the United States, there is a serious risk the Islamic Republic may once again resort to mass repression and executions of protesters held in detention.

Sunday Times: At Least 16,500 Protesters Killed and Thousands Suffer Eye Injuries
In its latest report, the Sunday Times, citing doctors inside Iran, writes that at least 16,500 protesters have been killed during the crackdown on nationwide protests, with approximately 330,000 others injured. According to the report, the majority of these casualties occurred over two consecutive days of peak violence, Thursday and Friday, January 8–9, 2026. It is further estimated that more than 8,000 people across Iran may have suffered blindness or severe eye injuries. The Sunday Times described these events as the most brutal crackdown by the Islamic Republic in its 47-year history.
Alongside this report, Iran International had previously reported that at least 12,000 people were killed. Meanwhile, according to the latest figures published by HRANA, a total of 3,090 deaths have so far been confirmed and recorded, including 2,885 protesters, 165 government or security personnel, and 21 non-protesting civilians. HRANA has also reported 3,882 cases under review, 2,055 people with severe injuries, 22,123 arrests, and 132 cases of forced confessions broadcast.
However, due to severe communication restrictions and the widespread internet shutdown, access to independent information has been significantly disrupted, and the final figures for casualties and injuries remain incomplete and not independently verifiable.

Unaccounted and Unprotected: Under a near-total communications blackout, up to 100,000 protesters in Iran may be detained in secret, unregistered facilities, cut off from their families and at risk of enforced disappearance, torture, and execution. Reports of rising deaths, fabricated charges, and extrajudicial killings mirror the conditions before the 1988 mass executions. Urgent international action is needed—silence costs lives.
