Two nurses from Rajai Heart Hospital in Tehran were arrested on January 8, 2026, for attempting to treat wounded protesters. During their detention, they were reportedly subjected to severe torture and sexual violence. According to a report by the television network Iran International, the two nurses were repeatedly raped while in custody. As a result of the injuries they sustained, portions of their intestines were surgically removed, and both now live with colostomy bags.

One of the nurses, a 33-year-old woman, was reportedly subjected to repeated sexual assault during her detention. Sources say security agents abused her in multiple ways, including digital rape, gang rape by two or three officers over consecutive days, and the insertion of a foreign object into her rectum, which caused severe bleeding and serious internal injuries. The injuries were reportedly so extensive that part of her intestine had to be removed, and her uterus suffered severe tearing. She has undergone several surgeries, and doctors have indicated that she may ultimately require a complete hysterectomy.

Another nurse detained in the same case also sustained severe physical injuries. According to the report, part of her intestine was damaged and surgically removed, leaving her with a colostomy bag. The report further states that, due to heavy bleeding, her uterus was completely removed. It also alleges that the family of one of the nurses was forced to pay a substantial sum to an intelligence officer to secure her release. In return, a document was reportedly prepared stating that the woman had entered into a temporary marriage with one of the officers, a step said to have been taken to facilitate her release. She was also reportedly required to sign a pledge stating that the abuse and rape had been committed by “rioters.”

These events occurred after Rajai Heart Hospital, located in the Valiasr district of Tehran, received a large number of gunshot victims on the evening of January 8. According to sources, security forces instructed hospital staff not to provide medical treatment to the wounded protesters. Out of 27 medical personnel present, 14 reportedly defied the order and attempted to treat the injured. Security forces later entered the hospital, opened fire on some of the wounded, and assaulted members of the medical staff. According to the report, two nurses were shot and killed in front of their colleagues, while five other female nurses were arrested. Their families reportedly remained unaware of their whereabouts for weeks.

The Iran Human Rights Documentation Center (IHRDC) has previously interviewed witnesses who reported sexual abuse and rape during detention or inside detention facilities. These testimonies indicate that sexual violence has, in some cases, been used as a systematic tool of torture, humiliation, and intimidation against detainees.

In recent days, multiple reports have emerged of citizens being detained and increasing security pressures in various cities across Iran—a trend that has heightened concerns over an intensifying domestic crackdown. In many cases, details regarding the reasons for arrest, charges filed, or the whereabouts of detainees remain unknown.

In the latest case, security forces raided the family home of Behrooz Chamanara, a Kurdish language and literature researcher, in Ilam on March 15, 2026, detaining two of his family members, Sasan and Parasto Chamanara, and transferring them to an undisclosed location.

Additionally, former political prisoner Leila Mirghaffari was reportedly arrested at her home on March 14, while there has been no news of former political prisoner Soheil Arabi for about a week, leading relatives to suspect he may also have been detained.

On March 14, Pejman Zare, a Baha’i resident of Shiraz, was arrested at his home by Ministry of Intelligence agents, who reportedly confiscated personal belongings, including electronic equipment and religious books. On the same day, filmmaker Mozhgan Ilanlou, along with her husband Mohammad Pirhadi and their daughter Leila Pirhadi, were arrested by plainclothes security forces at their home in Tehran. Sources report that these arrests were carried out without judicial warrants and involved violence.

On March 13, Sobhan Azizi and Omid Khoroushi were arrested in Saqqez, Kurdistan Province, also without judicial warrants, and no information has been released regarding their detention location or charges.

In another report, civil activist Behnam Chegini, based in France, stated that following the arrest of his niece, Dasta Farrokhi, a 20-year-old performing arts student at Soureh University, her family has been threatened by security forces, including potential job loss, dismissal, and revocation of professional licenses. Farrokhi was arrested on March 8, 2026, at her family home in Arak, Markazi Province, and transferred to an unknown location.

Separately, on March 10, IRGC forces reportedly opened fire on a private vehicle near Baneh in Kurdistan Province. Arman Khaleghpanah was killed, and three other passengers—Abdollah Mahjoor, Salar Azar, and Sheikh Zahed Shahabi—were detained. The body of Khaleghpanah has not yet been returned to his family, and the status of the three detainees remains unknown.

Due to the near-total internet blackout and severe communication restrictions within Iran, independent verification of all these reports is currently not possible.

According to a report by Mai Sato, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran, the suppression of nationwide protests in January 2026 was accompanied by widespread and well-documented human rights violations. These include the use of lethal force, deaths in custody, and the secret burial of victims, particularly children.

The report cites evidence indicating that the bodies of a number of protesters were held at the Kahrizak Forensic Medicine Center in southern Tehran, stored in body bags without transparent notification to their families. Some families reportedly identified their relatives only after repeated visits to morgues.

The findings further indicate that, in certain cases, families were subjected to pressure in order to retrieve the bodies of their children and were reportedly required to pay money. In some instances, they were asked to sign documents misrepresenting the deceased as affiliated with state forces.

A particularly concerning section of the report focuses on children. According to the findings, at least 216 children were killed during the crackdown. In some cases, parents were compelled to bury their children in secret, and there are reports that families were prevented from publicly naming victims or holding memorial ceremonies.

The report also documents cases of deaths in custody, secret executions, and situations in which families were left completely uninformed about the fate of their relatives. Some families reportedly learned of the deaths of loved ones without having been previously informed of their detention.

Drawing on testimonies and collected evidence, Sato reports the widespread and disproportionate use of lethal force against protesters. Documented methods include direct gunfire targeting the head and chest, the use of mounted machine guns, shooting from elevated positions such as rooftops into crowds, and the combined use of tear gas, pellet weapons, and batons.

The report also highlights widespread internet shutdowns, satellite signal interference, GPS disruption, and the use of communication infrastructure as a tool of repression. These measures are described as deliberate efforts to suppress information flows and obstruct the documentation of violations.

In another section, the report raises concerns about violations of medical neutrality, noting that hospitals and medical facilities—protected under international humanitarian and human rights law—were reportedly used as sites of surveillance and control. Some injured individuals were denied adequate medical care.

Given the significant discrepancies between official figures and independent estimates of the death toll, the Special Rapporteur emphasizes the urgent need for independent investigations and accountability for those responsible.

According to Iran’s judiciary, three individuals detained in connection with the January protests were executed in the early hours of March 19 in Qom.
Judicial authorities claimed that the three men, Saleh Mohammadi, Mehdi Ghasemi, and Saeed Davoudi, killed two police officers using bladed weapons during the protests on January 8. Official reports further state that the defendants confessed to the charges during interrogations and court proceedings.
Hours after the executions were announced, televised confessions attributed to the individuals were broadcast on state media, raising serious concerns about the potential use of coerced confessions.
The Iran Human Rights Documentation Center (IHRDC) had previously reported that Saleh Mohammadi’s case was redirected from security-related charges to a criminal charge of intentional murder, a shift that may have facilitated the issuance of a death sentence.
The timing of these executions are viewed as part of a broader effort to instill fear and deter public dissent, particularly amid ongoing military tensions and concerns over renewed protests. Such actions may be interpreted as an attempt to prevent citizens from returning to the streets and to suppress public discontent.
Given the context of the protests and multiple reports of due process violations, including restricted access to independent legal counsel and alleged pressure during interrogations, these executions have raised serious human rights concerns.

On March 18, 19 and 20, coinciding with the start of the Iranian new year, multiple reports have emerged of citizens being detained across various cities in Iran. In many cases, these arrests have been carried out without clear information regarding the individuals’ whereabouts, legal status, or the charges against them.

In the most recent incidents, in the early hours of Friday, March 20, several Kurdish citizens were arrested in Mahabad, West Azerbaijan Province, by security forces. According to reports, Jalal Alavi, a resident of Kouseh-Kahriz village, along with Vahab Hosseinzadeh, were detained without a judicial warrant and taken to undisclosed locations. Additionally, Huyar Zahabi, a 21-year-old from Mahabad, was arrested during a raid on a relative’s home. These arrests reportedly took place without official explanation, and no information about their current condition has been made available.

On the night of Thursday, March 19, Reza Dalman, a 24-year-old student at Sharif University of Technology, was arrested at his home by intelligence agents. Reports indicate that the charge against him relates to hanging a mouse doll from a tree. In the context of recent protests, the image of a mouse has been used as a form of political expression referring to Ali Khamenei, with activists using it to mock him as hiding underground during periods of unrest. It is also reported that information about his identity had been relayed to security authorities through the student Basij.

Earlier, on the night of Wednesday, March 18, Nima Hemmati and Mahan Hemmati, two Kurdish brothers, were arrested in Isfahan by security forces. Their vehicle was stopped, and they were detained without a warrant before being transferred to a detention facility run by the Intelligence Ministry in Isfahan Central Prison. Mahan Hemmati is 17 years old and a high school student, while Nima Hemmati is a graduate student.

Also on March 18, Manouchehr Aghabeigi, a board member of the Teachers’ Trade Association in Kermanshah, was arrested by security forces. According to available reports, he has not been able to contact his family since his detention, and his condition remains unknown. This has raised particular concern given his pre-existing heart and vascular conditions.

In Mashhad, Ahmad Rahimi, a physician and former university professor, along with his wife, Soheila Hosseini, were arrested at their home on the same date. Sources state that security agents searched their residence during the arrest. The couple had reportedly been involved in providing assistance to individuals injured during the January protests. As of the time of this report, no official information has been released regarding the reasons for their arrest or their place of detention.

According to the Committee for Tracking the Situation of Detainees, Mohammadreza Tabari, who was arrested during the January protests in Tehran, has been sentenced to death by Branch 26 of Tehran Revolutionary Court. His case has now been referred to the Supreme Court for appeal. Tabari, a 50-year-old resident of Orin in Eslamshahr, is facing charges including moharebeh (Waging War Against God).

In a report published on February 7, the Fars News Agency claimed that Tabari had played a leading role in the protests and alleged that he used a firearm during the unrest, injuring a member of the security forces. However, alternative reports point to inconsistencies in the case, including the lack of clear identification of the alleged injured individual in court documents and concerns that the trial was held without prior notice to his family or access to a lawyer of his choosing.

Available information also suggests that Tabari turned himself in after learning he was being sought by authorities. Since his arrest, he has reportedly had only very limited contact with his family. Concerns have additionally been raised about his financial situation and whether basic fair trial standards have been upheld throughout the legal process.

According to a report by the Baha’i International Community, Peyvand Naeimi, a young Baha’i imprisoned in Kerman, is facing serious danger. He has reportedly been subjected to torture, repeated interrogations, and at least two mock executions—one of the most severe forms of psychological coercion used to extract confessions.

He was arrested on January 8, 2026, on charges related to participation in protests. However, no trial has been held so far, and no evidence has been presented against him. Despite the fact that he was already in custody during some of the alleged incidents, new charges have been brought against him, raising concerns that additional fabricated accusations may be added to his case.

The report states that since mid-March, he has endured ten days of severe torture, continuous interrogation, and deprivation of food and water. His hands and feet were bound for 48 hours, he was chained to a wall, and repeatedly beaten. Even days later, the physical and psychological abuse reportedly continued. His religious beliefs were mocked, and he was subjected to further interrogations and mock executions in an attempt to force a confession. He is said to have been held in solitary confinement, denied access to food, water, and medical care, and his physical and mental condition is rapidly deteriorating.

Naeimi had previously been forced to make a confession under pressure, which was broadcast on February 1, 2026, on Iran’s state television Channel 2. Now, with new allegations being raised, authorities are reportedly attempting to extract further confessions through torture and mock executions.

Simin Fahandej, spokesperson for the Baha’i International Community, emphasized that such actions are aimed at persecuting Baha’is and coercing them to renounce their beliefs, and called on the international community to respond urgently.

This case also reflects a broader pattern: the Baha’i community in Iran has long faced systematic persecution, and recent reports indicate an escalation in arrests and crackdowns in cities such as Kerman, Tehran, Shiraz, Isfahan, and Yazd.

In a session held on Tuesday, March 25, 2026, at the European Union headquarters in Brussels, various aspects of the ongoing crisis in Iran were examined, with a focus on human rights violations and widespread restrictions on communication.

A group of lawmakers and human rights organizations highlighted the continued repression since the protests of January 2026, emphasizing arbitrary arrests, limited internet access, and violations of fundamental freedoms. They called on the European Union to reassess its policies toward the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Daniel Attard, a European Union representative and one of the event organizers, stressed that the EU must end its approach of normalizing relations with a regime that suppresses its citizens and refrain from any compromise with it.

Roya Boroumand, Executive Director of the Abdorrahman Boroumand Foundation for Human Rights in Iran, also addressed the situation of ordinary citizens under crisis conditions, raised the issue of executions, and called for measures to enable a peaceful transfer of power, lift internet restrictions, and release political prisoners.

Azadeh Akbari, Assistant Professor of Digital Transformation at the University of Twente in Netherlands, pointed to the Islamic Republic’s efforts to further restrict the flow of information and noted that the Iranian regime is even attempting to disrupt satellite communications.

Shahin Milani, Executive Director of the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center (IHRDC), presented a report on the killing of protesters, the condition of prisoners, and instances of torture. He also highlighted the harm inflicted on civilians during bombings and emphasized the need to protect infrastructure and civilian areas. Milani further addressed the violent use of so-called “non-lethal” weapons, which in many cases have caused death or serious, permanent injuries, including blindness among protesters.

The IHRDC, in its report last year titled “Weapons Without Borders: How Imported Weapons Fuel State Violence in Iran,” examined the role of companies from Türkiye, France, Italy, the United States, and Canada in supplying these weapons and technologies.

The session was held amid growing concerns over the intensification of domestic repression, ongoing human rights violations, and persistent communication restrictions in Iran.
