According to a report published by Iran International, five protest detainees sentenced to death in connection with a fire at a Basij base in eastern Tehran have been removed from the general ward of Ghezel Hesar Prison and transferred to an undisclosed location, raising concerns that their executions may be imminent.
Families have identified the individuals as Mohammad Amin Biglari, Shahin Vahedparast Kalur, Abolfazl Salehi Siavashani, Amirhossein Hatami, and Ali Fahim, whose cases were reportedly sent for the sentence to carried out. The case stems from events on the evening of January 8, involving a fire at the “185 Martyr Mahmoud Kaveh” Basij base on Damavand Street.
Reports, including televised confession videos aired by state media, suggest the defendants did not directly set the fire. According to these accounts, they had entered the building but were then confined inside by unidentified individuals before the premises were set ablaze, placing their lives at serious risk.
Eyewitnesses have also stated that large numbers of protesters had gathered that night, during which several motorcycles were set on fire nearby. They report that armed, unidentified individuals forced protesters into the building and blocked the exits. Despite the spread of fire and heavy smoke, security forces present at the scene allegedly failed to intervene.
The five individuals were sentenced to death on charges including “waging war against God” (moharebeh), “sowing corruption on Earth,” and collusion against national security by Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Abolghasem Salavati. The trial process was reportedly swift, with limited access granted to defense lawyers to review the case and present an effective defense.
