According to a report published by Iran International, concerns are mounting over the possible imminent execution of Masih Abbaskhani Davanlou, a detainee arrested during protests in Sari, Mazandaran province. He and his brother, Mohsen Abbaskhani Davanlou, have been prosecuted in connection with the death of a Basij member, Amin Ziaei, during the January 8 protests.
Information received indicates that at least two court hearings have been held in their case. During detention, both men were reportedly subjected to pressure and torture in order to extract forced confessions implicating them in the killing of the Basij member by stabbing. Reports further suggest that Masih Abbaskhani Davanlou has been sentenced to death, while the legal status of his older brother remains unclear. His recent transfer to solitary confinement has heightened fears that his execution may be imminent.
The Iran Human Rights Documentation Center (IHRDC) previously reported that the two brothers, arrested during the January 2026 protests, are being held in Sari Prison and face charges of “waging war against God” (moharebeh), which carry the risk of the death penalty. The brothers were reportedly present in the streets on January 8, when a brief physical altercation occurred between protesters and a member of the Basij forces. Judicial authorities have attributed the death of the Basij member to the two brothers.
The same report noted that both detainees were subjected to pressure and torture during their detention and are believed to be in poor physical condition. Additionally, their families have reportedly been denied visitation.
