Hossein Jafari, a political prisoner and who was injured during Iran’s 2022 nationwide protests, has once again been arrested by security forces and transferred to Qezel Hesar Prison after spending several months hospitalized at Aminabad Psychiatric Hospital. The move has intensified concerns over his mental condition and physical safety.
Jafari was first injured during the 2022 “Woman, Life, Freedom” protests, when he was struck by shotgun pellets fired by government forces, sustaining injuries to his eye and face. His name later became known in the media through connections with other protesters who suffered eye injuries, and he came to be recognized as one of the victims of the violent crackdown on the protests.
On the first anniversary of 2022 protests, he was arrested at his home and transferred to Karaj Central Penitentiary. A joint case was later opened against him and seven other activists and injured protesters in one of the branches of the Revolutionary Court in Karaj. He was subsequently released temporarily on bail.
However, following his release, Jafari was arrested again in Tehran after an altercation with security agents and transferred to Fashafouyeh Prison. According to informed sources, his physical and psychological condition had deteriorated to such an extent that prison authorities issued a certificate declaring him medically unfit to endure imprisonment, which eventually led to his release.
That release proved short-lived. He was arrested again and transferred to Kerman Prison, where he spent around eighty days in detention, including a period held in special suites designated for prisoners awaiting execution. Sources close to him say that the severe psychological pressure and harsh prison conditions caused serious damage to his mental health.
After his mental condition worsened, Hossein Jafari was transferred to Aminabad Psychiatric Hospital, where he remained under medical care for several months. Nevertheless, during the protests in January, security forces reportedly entered the medical facility, rearrested him, and transferred him to Qezel Hesar Prison.
Sources close to the political prisoner have warned that transferring him from a psychiatric treatment center back to prison, particularly while he remains in a critical mental state and is being held alongside prisoners accused of violent crimes, places his life at serious risk.
