Omid Bayat Sarmadi, who was arrested during the January 2026 nationwide protests in Iran, has been sentenced to 25 years of imprisonment by the Revolutionary Court in Tehran. According to published reports, his lawyers have been formally notified of the verdict. The ruling is not yet final and can still be appealed before the Supreme Court.

Kaveh Rad, Mr. Bayat Sarmadi’s attorney, announced the issuance of the verdict and stated that the legal team will challenge the ruling within the legal deadline. So far, no clear information has been made public regarding the charges brought against this political prisoner.

Omid Bayat Sarmadi, a Tehran-based DJ and travel tour organizer, was arrested by security forces on January 13, 2026, during the nationwide protests and was subsequently transferred to Greater Tehran Central Penitentiary.

Human rights reports indicate that he was subjected to pressure and coercion during detention in an attempt to extract forced confessions. Iranian judicial and security authorities, however, have yet to provide transparent information regarding the legal proceedings or the allegations against him.

Human rights advocates have in recent months raised concerns over the growing number of harsh sentences issued against protesters and detainees, particularly amid the intensified security atmosphere and broader crackdown on dissent following the recent conflict involving Iran.
