On Tuesday, May 26, 2026, Mizan News Agency, affiliated with Islamic Republic’s judiciary, announced the execution of Gholamreza Khani Shekarab, a prisoner accused of intelligence cooperation and spying for Israel. According to the report, the sentence was carried out after being upheld by the Supreme Court.
Mizan described Gholamreza Khani Shekarab as “one of the operational ringleaders of Mossad” and claimed that he had been active outside Iran on behalf of the Israeli intelligence agency, including recruiting individuals inside the country for what authorities described as security-related operations.
According to the claims made in the report, he was recruited by Mossad following several trips to neighboring countries and contacts with individuals affiliated with the agency. State-affiliated media also alleged that he had been involved in recruiting operatives, planning acts of sabotage, and transferring equipment used in operations.
Fars News Agency, which is close to Islamic Republic’s security institutions, had also reported a day earlier that Khani Shekarab had been sentenced to death, stating that the ruling was issued following court proceedings and the presentation of evidence. No details have been released regarding the location where the execution was carried out.
The execution took place despite repeated warnings by human rights organizations in recent days about the imminent risk of his execution. Reports had also previously emerged alleging that Gholamreza Khani Shekarab was abducted in Iraq and transferred to Iran, raising concerns about the circumstances of his arrest and the judicial process in his case.
According to Tavaana, Khani Shekarab was unaware of his imminent execution during a phone call with his family one day before the sentence was carried out. Tavaana also reported that he was born in 1992, was a former MMA champion, an international referee and coach in the sport, and had been living in Turkey prior to his arrest.
Meanwhile, human rights organizations have warned of a sharp rise in executions in political and security-related cases in Iran. In a statement published on May 21, 2026, Amnesty International said that since the start of the recent military tensions, at least 36 people have been executed in Iran, while at least 78 others remain at risk of execution.
