Iran’s judiciary announced that Mehdi Khanaki, who had been detained in connection with the January 2026 protests, was executed early on Wednesday, July 22.
According to Mizan News Agency, Khanaki was arrested by officers from the Alborz Province Intelligence Police at his home in Karaj on February 10, 2026. Judicial authorities accused him of “carrying out operational activities on behalf of Israel, the United States, and hostile groups,” membership in an opposition group, and manufacturing, procuring, and possessing weapons, ammunition, and explosives.
A branch of the Karaj Revolutionary Court sentenced him to death and ordered the confiscation of all his assets under legislation imposing harsher penalties for espionage and cooperation with hostile states. The judiciary said the sentence was carried out after being upheld by the Supreme Court.
Before the announcement of his execution, no clear information had been released about the court branch that heard the case, the identity of his lawyer, whether he had effective access to independent legal counsel, the circumstances under which statements attributed to him were obtained, or the conduct of his trial. Judicial authorities have also not officially disclosed the location where the execution was carried out.
