Mehdi Yarahi, a musician critical of the regime, has been detained. He had just released a song in which he said, “Take off your headscarf.” The phrase became a popular hashtag on Persian social media.

Four years ago, Mahsa (Jina) Amini died in the custody of Iran’s morality police, on September 16, 2022. Her death sparked nationwide protests and a movement that demanded an end to the Islamic Republic’s repression.

Four years later, IHRDC examines the killings of girls and young women during the protests that followed. Based on independently confirmed cases, our analysis documents the scale and patterns of these killings. The actual number is likely higher.

No one has been held accountable for these killings. Meanwhile, enforcement of compulsory hijab has returned to the streets of Iran.
