Ali Abdi, a PhD student at Yale and a graduate of Sharif University, must report to Evin Prison on Monday, February 24, to begin serving his prison sentence.
On Sunday, February 23, Abdi wrote on his Telegram channel that tomorrow, Monday, February 24, he will go to Evin Prison to serve his sentence. Then he explained that he has been sentenced to a total of 12 years in prison. 6 years for articles he wrote a decade ago about gender and sexual minorities, 5 years for protesting the announced results of the 2009 election and 1 year for ‘propaganda against the regime’ during those years. These sentences have been upheld by the appeals court, and 6 years of them are enforceable.
Abdi was arrested on June 22, 2023, in Isfahan by security forces and transferred to Ward 2-A of Evin Prison.
