Ali Akbar Zar, a 39-year-old political prisoner and a father of two, was arrested on June 16, 2023, and transferred to Evin prison after posting critical content on his Instagram page. His indictment was issued in August by Branch Six of the Evin Prosecutor's Office, and he has been charged with insulting the Prophet, insulting Supreme Leader Khamenei and disseminating propaganda against the Islamic Republic.
Following Mr. Zar's complaint against prison conditions, he was barred from having family visits and was sent to solitary confinement as punishment. The executions of several political prisoners in recent days have raised concerns that other prisoners, such as Mr. Zar, could be executed without prior knowledge. Insulting the Prophet, one of Mr. Zar’s charges, carries the death penalty under Iranian law.
