On Tuesday, July 8, 2025, Arman Shadivand — an artist and environmental activist from Ilam — was subjected to 30 lashes in the enforcement branch of Darreh Shahr courthouse, after being convicted of “insulting President Ebrahim Raisi.”
He was originally sentenced on March 17, 2025, by Branch 101 of the Criminal Court in Darreh Shahr, Ilam Province, for “insulting officials and agents.”
In late 2024, the Darreh Shahr Prosecutor’s Office issued an indictment against Shadivand on two charges: “insulting officials,” referred to the criminal court, and “disseminating propaganda against the Islamic Republic,” referred to the Revolutionary Court. In November 2024, he was summoned to Branch 2 of the Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor’s Office in Darreh Shahr and detained upon appearance, then released on bail the next day.
Separately, on January 19, 2025, he was sentenced in absentia by Branch 2 of the Ilam Revolutionary Court to two years in prison for “disseminating propaganda against the Islamic Republic.” This sentence was upheld in full by the Ilam Province Court of Appeals on May 19, 2025.
