Armita Gravand, a 16-year-old girl from Kermanshah who is living in Tehran, passed out before noon on Sunday, October 1, 2023 at a metro station in Tehran. She fell to the ground, and was taken to the hospital. Reports on social media stated that she was physically beaten by government agents for not observing the mandatory hijab. Armita Gravand has been unconscious and hospitalized in Fajr Air Force Hospital since the incident.
Iran’s state-run news agency, IRNA, published an interview with Armita’s parents, in which they seemed to reject reports that their daughter’s injury was caused by government agents. However, like many similar situations, the parents’ statement was likely forced. Security forces are reported to have surrounded the hospital in which Armita Gravand is hospitalized. In addition, Maryam Lotfi, a journalist who went to the hospital to report on the case, was detained by the authorities while she was interviewing Armita Gravand’s mother.

According to Iran International, Armita Geravand's parents were taken to the office of Delavar Al-Qasimehr, the police commander of eastern Tehran Province, and were made to pledge that they have no complaints from "any person, organization or institution".
Armita Geravand’s condition has not changed in recent days and there are no signs of a recovery.

Iranian state media have reported that Armita Geravand has died. The circumstances of her injury, and the subsequent restrictions and intimidation tactics implemented against her family, indicate that the Islamic Republic was responsible for her death. Armita Geravand’s tragic story is yet another example of the regime’s brutality against Iranian citizens, particularly women who do not observe the regime’s discriminatory dress code.
