Varisheh Moradi, a political prisoner and an environmental and women's rights activist, was sentenced to death in a ruling delivered to her lawyers on Sunday, November 10, 2024. Ms. Moradi received the death sentence from Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Salavati, on charges of baghy, or armed rebellion against the Islamic Republic, through alleged membership in the Kurdish group (KJAR).
Moradi was initially arrested on August 1, 2023, by security forces near Sanandaj. Thirteen days later, she was transferred from the Sanandaj Ministry of Intelligence detention center to the Tehran Ministry of Intelligence detention center (Ward 209 of Evin prison ). On December 26, 2023, after completing her interrogation, she was moved to the women’s ward of Evin prison. Her first trial session took place on June 16, 2024, at Branch 15 of the Revolutionary Court. However, a second trial session did not occur in August due to her refusal to appear, and in September, it was postponed because of the absence of Judge Amouzad and the prosecutor's representative. Finally, the trial resumed on October 5, 2024, at Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court.
According to the Kurdistan Human Rights Network, Judge Salavati barred Mrs. Moradi and her lawyers from presenting a defense in both the June and October trial sessions. Ms. Moradi, who had previously gone on a hunger strike in solidarity with the No to Death Penalty Campaign on October 10, International Day Against the Death Penalty, ended her strike after 20 days in response to appeals from numerous human rights activists and allies.
