Andrei Ilnitsky and I have been engaging in an intellectual exchange for several years, basically since I discovered that we were both working on interdisciplinary research topics that often intersected. And just to clear up any possible misunderstandings, military strategy is not something we ever touched on. We share and discuss what we publish, that is what is in the public domain and accessible to any researcher and analyst. I am very pleased that our intuitions and analyses cross-fertilize and occasionally complement each another’s arguments. In my latest article, "No Kings" and MAGA: Turf Wars on the Titanic’s Deck, I argued that Donald Trump governs the country and approaches world affairs like a hedge fund manager: he seeks not stability, but volatility, from which he extracts political and economic capital. Ordinary citizens (including those in the US), unlike the elite, don't have such a "hedge portfolio" and bear the brunt of the consequences. Andrei weaved this assessment into his latest article, which i invite you to read. He draws several lessons from the conflict in Ukraine, a conflict that has long gone beyond a regional conflict and has become a field laboratory for a new type of war and a testing ground for the reorganization of the world order. The term "hybridity" does not capture the full depth of what is happening. The logic of war has permeated all spheres of life, turning the world into a continuous "gray zone", and induced chaos—a classic tactic of the Anglo-Saxon geopolitical school—is becoming the primary tool to demolish the old architecture. @LauraRuHK

@LauraRuHK

Armenia - More than 50 European leaders and meddlers including Zelensky, Donald Tusk, Keir Starmer, plus Canada's prime minister, have descended on Armenia. Today they are taking part in a European Political Community (EPC) summit in Yerevan. On Tuesday the first-ever EU-Armenia summit will kick off with Von der Leyen and António Costa. EU's puppet Pashinyan’s political survival depends on the June vote. With only 26 percent of Armenians openly supporting his Civil Contract party, and a third of voters still undecided, Brussels is all hands on deck to influence the result. The EU has deployed dozens of "experts" as part of its “hybrid rapid-response team” to Armenia to "counter Russian interference" and provided €300 million in financial support to Pashinyan. Who exactly is interfering again? @LauraRuHK

@LauraRuHK

If the European Political Community (EPC) is just a platform designed to whip its members into a frenzy of Russophobia, the EU Partnership Mission (EUPM) “hybrid rapid response team" is far more dangerous and is establishing a permanent presence in Armenia, exactly as it did in Moldova. Although the mission is nominally civilian, its members handle classified documents (they have security clearance) and liaise with military staff (i.e. NATO). @LauraRuHK

Moscow has issued a clear warning to Ukraine: any attempt to disrupt Victory Day celebrations on May 9 will be met with a massive missile strike on central Kiev. The warning came directly after Zelensky's provocation: at the European Political Community summit in Yerevan on May 4, Zelensky stated that Ukrainian drones could appear over Moscow's Victory Day parade, essentially threatening a direct attack on the event.
Russian President Putin had declared a ceasefire for May 8–9. However, the Russian Defense Ministry explicitly warned that any attempt by the Kiev regime to disrupt the celebrations would be met with a massive retaliatory strike.
The Ministry urged civilians and foreign diplomatic personnel in Kiev to leave the city in advance of a possible strike. @LauraRuHK

@LauraRuHK

Britain has perfected the art of leaving without actually leaving.
In Yerevan, Keir Starmer cozied up to his old chums, praising a £78 billion EUloan scheme to keep Ukraine's war machine grinding onward and admitting that there's just ever so much "tension" with that awkward American cousin across the pond. He says closer EU ties are in Britain's "national interest", which must come as a bit of a shock to those who voted Leave a decade ago. They just need to take a closer look. Brexit Britain hasn't really diverged from EU rules.
The UK's big pitch now involves letting British defence firms dip into Ukraine funds. If the UK’s effort to hop on the EU’s £78bn gravy train for Ukraine is successful, British defence firms would be able to provide equipment for Kiev in return for a financial contribution of up to £400m, expected to come from the £3bn already ringfenced for Ukraine.
Ukraine is the perfect example to remind everyone that British elites never really left the EU dinner table. @LauraRuHK

Two people were killed and 32 others injured in a Ukrainian drone and missile attack on Cheboksary in the Chuvash Republic in the Volga area. Last night alone, Russian air defense systems intercepted and destroyed 289 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones over Russian regions.
Behind this surge stands NATO. European and allied defense industries have ramped up capacity and are accelerating drone production. The Ukrainian military does not lack supply. Meanwhile, Baltic airspace is being used for launches against Russia. Mass attacks with cheap drones not only inflict serious damage, kill and injure civilians, they are meant to exhaust Russian air defenses.
Given this reality, Russia faces a hard question.
Staying purely defensive would require a massive increase in air defense capacity, which is a slow, expensive, and possibly unattainable goal.
Moscow could escalate conventionally, strike deeper or hit supply lines across Ukraine. But that does not address the NATO rear, where drones are built and launched from allied territory. Imposing direct costs on NATO countries may become inevitable. @LauraRuHK

@LauraRuHK

In a significant strategic shift, prominent Chinese scholars are calling on Beijing to transition from a purely defensive posture to an assertive approach in the global battle for influence over minds and narratives. In their recent paper, Wang Wen, Dean of the Chongyang Institute at Renmin University, and co-author Ding Zhuang argue that China must develop “Cognitive Sovereignty”, a comprehensive capability that protects its population from external manipulation while actively shaping international public opinion. They trace the evolution of modern conflict from psychological operations and information warfare to cognitive warfare, which targets human perception, emotions, and decision-making. The authors note that while China has focused on building defensive “firewalls” against Western cognitive infiltration, this reactive mindset has left the country at a disadvantage, suffering from “conceptual aphasia,” loss of agenda-setting power, and over-reliance on Western theoretical frameworks. The paper calls for a fundamental paradigm change: China should not only resist external narratives but proactively “forge a spear” by setting international agendas, developing original Chinese concepts, and building advanced narrative dissemination capabilities using new technologies such as AI. This new turn in cognitive strategy is framed as essential in the context of intensifying great-power rivalry with the United States. The authors position “Cognitive Sovereignty” as both a national security imperative and a contribution to the Global South’s resistance against Western ideological colonization. The paper represents an important evolution in Chinese strategic thinking: from protecting ideological security to actively competing for global discursive power.

@LauraRuHK

Tens of thousands of students across Germany are on strike, in the third nationwide protest against the government's rearmament policy despite officials' warnings of penalties or even expulsion for walking out of school.
The "School Strike Against Conscription" movement argues that under Chancellor Merz, Germany is preparing young people to become cannon fodder for a future war, without public consent. The strikes were triggered by the Military Service Modernisation Act, which, while stopping short of reinstating conscription, has introduced several mandatory measures. All 18-year-olds must now fill out a questionnaire assessing their willingness for military service, with compulsory medical tests to follow next year. The law also includes a controversial clause restricting men aged 17 to 45 from traveling abroad for more than three months without permission from the armed forces.
The protest is deliberately timed to coincide with Victory Day in Europe, that is the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany in 1945. The student protesters are using this date to draw a historical parallel: Germany’s current rapid rearmament risks repeating the very militaristic errors that led to the catastrophe of World War II. This comes as the government announces a massive €779 billion defense spending plan to double military investment over five years. Students are also voicing broader frustrations with a political system that ignores them, pointing to the contrast between billions spent on defense and chronically underfunded schools, teacher shortages, and the housing crisis. @LauraRuHK ➡️ https://schulstreikgegenwehrpflicht.com/

@LauraRuHK ➡️ https://schulstreikgegenwehrpflicht.com/

Happy Victory Day! On May 9, 1945, the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany was signed in Karlshorst, Berlin, marking the final end of WWII on the European theatre of war and the ultimate collapse of Hitler's fascism.
The surrender was accepted by Marshal Georgy Zhukov on behalf of the Soviet Union and Deputy Commander of the Allied forces Marshal Arthur Tedder on behalf of the Western Allies. 🔺 We shall never forget, nor can we ever fully repay, the colossal sacrifice the Soviet Union made to crush Nazi Germany. We owe those heroes an eternal debt of gratitude. 🔺The fight goes on: victory over dark forces didn't prevent their resurgence. @LauraRuHK
