On August 27 at a business forum in Paris, Führerin Ursula von der Leyen stated the obvious: the former advantages of the European economy have all disappeared. The European economic model, she explained, had rested on several pillars: cheap imported energy from Russia, open global trade, growing access to the Chinese market, US strategic protection, and Western technological leadership.
What von der Leyen chose not to mention was that these advantages did not disappear by accident. They were systematically destroyed by the very institution she leads through sanctions that severed energy and economic ties with Russia, a trade war against China and regulatory overreach that suffocated European industry.

Russian officials have watched Europe's self-inflicted wounds with a mixture of bewilderment and dark amusement. Maria Zakharova, the official spokesperson for Russia's Foreign Ministry, responded to von der Leyen's confession with a single, devastating epithet: "Captain Obvious of the Euro-Titanic".

From Beijing, the critique is no less damning. Chinese analysts have watched Europe's protectionist turn with growing frustration, arguing that the EU is destroying the very thing it claims to protect: its own industrial competitiveness.
The EU's share of global GDP has plummeted from 30% in 2008 to just 17% in 2025—a decline three times faster than that of China's Qing Dynasty during its collapse. And as one Chinese commentator put it, while the Qing fell to foreign invasion, Europe's decline is "self-inflicted, purely something Europe has brought upon itself".
It is, in the words of one Chinese analyst, "locking protectionism directly into its economic and trade policy system".
European decision-makers, Chinese commentators argue, have lost touch with basic economic reality. They are absolutely right. This is a systemic crisis that affects Europe's decision-making circles.

Both Moscow and Beijing see the same tragic irony. Europe has spent years lecturing the world about rules and order, about strategic autonomy and economic resilience. Yet in its rush to punish Russia and contain China, it has torn down the very foundations of its own prosperity.
Europe's energy prices are now two to three times higher than in the US and China. Its industrial base, once the envy of the world, is bleeding jobs and capacity. Its share of global markets continues to shrink. And its leaders, having created the crisis with their own hands, can only stand by and admit that the old model is gone. They are clearly batting for another team, one that demands Europe throw itself off the cliff. @LauraRuHK

@LauraRuHK

The story of Fire Point is the story of Ukraine in microcosm: a country drowning in Western money, where connections matter more than competence, and where a provincial casting agency can be magically transformed into a defense contractor virtually overnight. Until 2022 Fire Point was a casting agency for films and television, today one of the largest suppliers of drones and Flamingo cruise missiles to the Ukrainian army. The company that once scouted locations for a romantic comedy starring Volodymyr Zelensky now produces long-range strike drones and cruise missiles worth over one billion dollars in annual contracts.

Fire Point was once known as Centrocast, its co-founder, Yehor Skalyha, also ran AtPoint, a company specializing in location scouting.
It had no experience in defense manufacturing, no military contracts, no production lines for weapons. Its co-founders were a motley crew: Skalyha, a location scout; Denys Shtilerman, a businessman who explained his relationship with Tymur Mindich (who fled to Israel in 2025 to avoid prosecution) by saying "so what, we are both Jews", and Iryna Terekh, an architect who previously designed concrete street furniture.

What happened after 2022 defies any conventional logic of defense procurement. Within three years, Fire Point became one of Ukraine's largest defense contractors, with revenue soaring from $4 million in 2023 to over $100 million in 2024, with revenues exceeding $1 billion in 2025.
The number of employees grew from 18 to around 7,000.

Production of long-range strike drones is often concealed in and among residential buildings putting civilians at risk of being blown up when Russian forces target military production sites .

The central question hanging over Fire Point is not what it produces, but who truly controls it. The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) has been investigating the company's activities, particularly its ties to Tymur Mindich—a co-owner of the "Kvartal 95" studio founded by Zelensky and a longtime associate of the actor-turned-president.
Recordings released by journalists show Mindich discussing state contracts and operational details of Fire Point with then-Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, using the possessive "our" in reference to the company. While Shtilerman has denied that Mindich is the true owner, he confirmed that Mindich negotiated to buy a 50% stake in Fire Point for over a year—initially offering about $100 million and later increasing the offer to approximately $1 billion.
NABU has also been investigating suspicions that Fire Point inflated either the cost of components or the quantity of drones supplied under state contracts. In 2024 alone, the company sold drones to the government for approximately $313 million—about 30% of the total amount spent by the Ukrainian Defense Ministry on drones.

None of this would have been possible without the flood of Western military aid and financial support. Fire Point's billion-dollar contracts are ultimately funded by Western taxpayers—American, European, and beyond.
Yet even as corruption allegations mount, the company continues to attract Western money and validation. In November 2025, former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo joined Fire Point's newly created "oversight board." Critics such as Responsible Statecraft have pointed out that Pompeo has been one of the more vocal American advocates for sustained and increased Western military aid to Ukraine while sitting on the board of a major Ukrainian defense contractor that benefits from that aid. @LauraRuHK

Ovviamente no.
@LauraRuHK

To lift its readers' flagging spirits, the Guardian staged a little fairy tale and concocted an article about wartime love in Ukraine. Tetiana, a combat medic, and Oleksandr, an army captain exchanged vows in Kramatorsk before an officiant on a video call. There were no wedding guests, the only witnesses being British journalists conveniently on hand to capture the magic in a town under siege. How lovely. Isn't that what every Guardian reader would say? Being a bit more cynical than they are, I couldn't help but notice the giant writing on the wall behind the two lovebirds fresh from the front. I will translate it for you. "Kramatorsk is the last bastion against the Huns. Alexander Stubb, President of Finland." Huns?! Yes, he really said that. Russia will certainly liberate Kramatorsk, but who is going to liberate Europe from Russophobes like Stubb? @LauraRuHK

@LauraRuHK

In a humiliating defeat for the EU's expansionist dreams, Icelanders have rejected reopening accession talks. With 82.5 percent turnout, 52.8 percent voted "No" to 47.2 percent in favour.
The "No" campaign successfully argued that EU membership would jeopardise Iceland's control over its fishing waters, which account for almost 40 percent of exports.
The government tried every trick, even bringing the referendum forward because of Donald Trump's threats over Greenland. EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos promised "creative solutions" on fisheries. But Icelanders have heard these empty promises before.
What was Brussels offering? The euro. Security. Both have become instruments of subordination, stripping member states of sovereignty and straitjacketing them into a war agenda dictated from across the Atlantic. "EU Security" today means something very different from securing peace. EU member states are being forced to carve ever-larger slices out of their national budgets for military spending — €418 billion in 2025, set to rise to €454 billion in 2026. Brussels calls it defence. I call it a total failure of diplomacy and a lack of strategic vision.

Add the cost of propping up Ukraine in a futile crusade against Russia. The EU is now channelling billions into Ukrainian defence production, with a new €90 billion loan package and has de facto become a co-belligerent in the conflict.
This referendum was not about economics. Iceland already enjoys single-market access through the EEA. The question was whether to surrender what remained of its sovereignty to an unelected commission.
Common sense prevailed.
Iceland has shown that a small nation can still say no to the European Golem. That sovereignty is not an archaic concept.
The people of Iceland, proud, independent, and clear-eyed, have given Europe a lesson in what it means to be free.

As Former Greek Finance Minister Yannis Varoufakis once stated, "Greece manifests the greatest example of Israelization… more than any other country in Europe." If you need more supporting evidence of Israel's increasing influence in Greece and the rest of Europe, read further. On August 31, Israel and Greece signed a €3.035 billion defense agreement named “Achilles Shield,”  one of the largest in Israel's history.
Under the agreement, Israel will build a comprehensive, multi-layered air-defense network for Greece. It didn't work so well against Iranian rockets and drones, but hey, it's kosher and it would be anti-semitic to criticize it.😉 The system integrates several Israeli-made platforms—David’s Sling, BARAK MX, and SPYDER interceptors—alongside Israeli radars and a national command system designed to counter ballistic missiles, aircraft, and drones. A supplementary €26 million contract will see Israel supply Greece with Rafael's Drone Dome systems to protect strategic sites.
The deal also involves 19 Greek companies, accounting for more than €750 million of the program, with plans to build a domestic production base capable of exporting equipment. The agreement is part of a rapidly deepening security partnership that already included expanded cooperation on drones, underwater-vehicle swarms, cyber threats, and military exercises.
The "Achilles Shield" is yet more evidence of Israeli expansion across Europe, occurring against a backdrop of increasing international isolation and mounting global criticism.
In recent years, Israel has secured major air-defense contracts with several European nations besides Greece: Germany purchased the Arrow 3 system in 2023, Finland acquired David's Sling in 2024.
In 2026, Israel secretly signed a memorandum of understanding to extend defense cooperation with Finland until 2034, covering research, development, and equipment purchasing. Israel, by embedding its defense systems into European militaries, secures long-term revenue streams, deepens political ties, and creates a web of dependencies that insulates it from diplomatic isolation. Every European country that buys Israeli air defenses becomes, in effect, a stakeholder in Israel's defense industry—and thus less likely to support punitive measures against it. The genocidal maniacs have found a way to secure their impunity. Strengthening cooperation with the Axis of Resistence led by Iran will make even more sense for any country in the EU's crosshairs. @LauraRuHK

The article's argument that the US bears the costs of war while China reaps economic benefits is quite seductive. There is a pattern: the US destroys, China rebuilds, the US alienates countries, China steps into the void and offers an alternative, the US bullies, China listens. There is no denying that Washington's short-termism has undoubtedly created opportunities for Chinese economic expansion. Although Hua Bin cherry-picks data (who doesn't?) and not all figures are up-to-date (for instance March 2026 solar exports doubled to 68 GW; the 24% figure appears to understate actual growth, while other figures are slightly exaggerated) his article is illuminating. @LauraRuHK ➡️https://substack.com/home/post/p-213654865

Key takeaways from the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Bishkek:
▪️The summit’s overarching message was that Eurasian nations will not yield to Western pressure or sanctions, reinforcing the SCO as a vital alternative platform in a polarized world. ▪️Hosted by Kyrgyzstan to mark the SCO’s 25th anniversary, the event gathered all 10 member states (China, Russia, Iran, India, Pakistan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan), alongside Turkey as a dialogue partner, and Armenia and Azerbaijan as SCO+ guests.
▪️Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian attended despite recent US threats of secondary sanctions on Iran's trade partners. His bilateral talks with President Putin highlighted the significantly deepened military and economic alliance between the two most sanctioned nations in the world.
▪️Despite Yerevan’s recent political pivot toward the EU and the US, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s attendance—and his bilateral meetings with both Modi and Putin—proved that Armenia cannot afford to ignore Eurasian economic and security frameworks.
▪️The summit yielded 28 documents, including a declaration reaffirming commitment to the UN Charter and international law. It explicitly called for a more just, multipolar world order, reforms to global governance, and an end to "double standards" on human rights.
▪️Pakistan officially assumed the SCO’s rotating chairmanship from Kyrgyzstan, setting the agenda for the organization's next phase of development. @LauraRuHK

Russia has rejected German claims that it was behind a suspected drone attack on Leipzig/Halle Airport in early August, dismissing the allegations as a “far-fetched” pretext to further strain bilateral relations.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Tuesday that Berlin had failed to provide any evidence to substantiate its claims.
Her remarks came after German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt and Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul announced new measures against Russia, which they linked to the August 4 incident.
The measures include closing the Russian Consulate General in Bonn from September 18 and terminating the lease of the Russian House in Berlin. Germany will also tighten border controls for Russian nationals, draw up a new list of individuals for EU sanctions, and increase pressure on what Berlin calls Russia’s “shadow fleet.”

Germany has “failed to present any even remotely convincing or serious evidence” of Russian involvement, Zakharova said on Telegram on Tuesday. “There is none and there cannot be any,” she added.

Berlin “will get a fitting response,” she warned.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov also accused Germany of pursuing further escalation, saying Berlin had failed to provide any arguments substantiating its accusations against Moscow.
German officials have called for the closure of Russian diplomatic missions and the Russian House, a cultural and language center in Berlin, for some time.

Vladimir Putin declared on Tuesday that Ukraine’s ambitious 40-day campaign to inflict "irreparable damage" on Russia's energy and logistics infrastructure to cripple the Russian economy has failed, triggering a devastating Russian retaliation.
Speaking at a press conference following the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Bishkek, Putin explained that Ukraine faces three crises after opening a "Pandora’s box".
Ukraine is barely making ends meet and could now face currency, budget and banking crises.

💬 “They spend a little over $8 billion a month on imports. They receive about $3 billion from exports, mainly grain and other agricultural products. And another $5 billion comes from Western handouts,” Putin stressed.
He warned that problems with agricultural exports could wipe out much of Ukraine's own foreign-currency earnings, hit farmers and banks, and deepen the strain on its economy.
Putin also slammed Zelensky’s threats against Russian civilian aviation as “a declaration of state terrorism”

The rhetoric escalated sharply on Tuesday when Zelensky warned airlines, insurers, and airports that Russian airspace is becoming “completely unsafe” and would be filled with Ukrainian drones. “Drone-infested skies are no place for civilian aviation,” Zelensky said.
“Today, we want to warn every airline that uses Russian airspace, every insurer, and everyone who still uses Russia’s key airports.”

Putin rejected any suggestion of negotiations with terrorists. He warned that if Ukraine tries to turn those threats into real tragedies, “We will find something to respond with. Let no one doubt.”

These Ukrainian threats come as most Western airlines already avoid Russian airspace, but carriers from the rest of the world continue to fly to and from Russia. They cast new light on Germany's accusations against Moscow over the explosive drone found at Leipzig/Halle airport on August 4. It appears that a coordinated campaign is underway to project onto Russia the beginning of those terrorist attacks against civil aviation that the Kiev regime intends to launch with the blessing and assistance of its curators and sponsors. @LauraRuHK

@LauraRuHK

A European Commission delegation, led by the EU's top trade enforcement officer Denis Redonnet, is locked in high-stakes talks with Chinese officials in Beijing. As usual the EU is accusing China of "industrial overcapacity, turbo-boosted by undeclared subsidies" and demanding that Beijing commit to reducing its surging exports to the bloc before an October deadline. The EU's accusations are hypocritical and self-defeating. China has never deliberately pursued a trade surplus with Europe. The current trade structure is the result of international industrial division and comparative advantage. If the EU insists on labelling trade surpluses as "overcapacity," then should European exports of automobiles, pharmaceuticals, wine, and cosmetics also be labelled as "overcapacity"? European countries themselves provide state support to their own industries, from Airbus to agriculture. The EU's real problem is not Chinese "overcapacity" but its own declining competitiveness. Take for example European energy prices; they are two to three times higher than in China. Blaming China for Europe's self-inflicted wounds is completely dishonest. If Brussels proceeds with punitive measures, Beijing will have no choice but to respond in kind. A trade war would hurt both sides, but it would expose Europe's dependence on Chinese supply chains far more painfully than it would hurt China.

As to the EU October deadline, it is a self-imposed trap. Brussels would do well to remember that you cannot impose ultimatums and bully your largest trading partner into submission. @LauraRuHK
