Since the news broke on Monday that senior Trump administration cabinet members accidentally included the editor in chief of The Atlantic in a group chat on the Signal encrypted messaging platform where the officials were making secret plans to bomb Yemen, the ensuing news cycle and the constant mentions of Signal have led to the encrypted messaging platform doubling its usual rate of new downloads, the nonprofit organization that runs Signal tells WIRED.

Appointment of a Former Al-Qaeda Member to the Syrian Supreme Fatwa Council
On September 18, 2015, a disturbing video surfaced showing Abdul Rahim Atoun, also known as Abu Abdullah al-Shami, reading the execution verdicts for 56 soldiers. This gruesome event took place on the runway of Abu al-Duhur Military Airport in #Idlib, #Syria. Abdul Rahim Atoun, a prominent member of Jabhat al-Nusra, the former al-Qaeda branch in Syria, was seen overseeing the execution of these soldiers in the video.
In a recent development, on March 28, 2025, Abdul Rahim Atoun was appointed by Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, the leader of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (#HTS), to a significant position in the organization. Atoun has been designated as a member of the Supreme Fatwa Council in Syria. This appointment underscores his continued influence within the extremist groups operating in the region.

End-users in cellular networks are at risk of connecting to fake base stations, and we show that mitigations pushed in 5G are insufficient.
Machine-in-the-Middle (MitM) attackers aim to overhear and manipulate network traffic. The MitM position can also be used as an entry point for baseband exploitation. Proceeding from there, attackers can gain full control of a user’s phone. Standardization bodies pushed many mitigations against MitM into the specification of cellular networks. However, roaming agreements still enable powerful attackers to perform seamless attacks – even in 5G!
In this talk, you’ll learn about the complex nature of cellular roaming and how roaming is implemented in recent smartphones. The specification puts a lot of trust in network operators. This impedes security in real-world deployments. We show that the capabilities of network operators exceed the intended capabilities of lawful interception. If those are abused, end-users have no possibility of noticing the attacks.
Attacks on roaming are challenging to prevent or even detect in practice. The specification needs a major update to make cellular roaming secure. Users at risk should be aware of the current state of the system. We discuss multiple mitigations, including solutions for end-user devices.
