TikTok fined in S. Korea over privacy issue

SEOUL, July 15 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's telecommunications regulator said Wednesday it fined video sharing platform TikTok Pte Ltd. 186 million won (US$155,000) for mishandling user data amid growing global privacy concerns of the social media service.

The Korea Communications Commission (KCC) said the social media app popular among teenagers violated local telecommunication laws by collecting data of children under the age of 14 without parental consent, and did not properly notify users of its overseas transfer of personal data.

Naver transfers Hong Kong backup data to Singapore

The South Korean search giant denied allegations that its sensitive user data stored abroad was at risk.

South Korea's Naver said on its official blog page that it has moved user backup data that was stored in Hong Kong to Singapore.

The data in Hong Kong was destroyed between July 6 to 10 and the server that was used to store it has been rebooted, the company said.

The company's move comes shortly after China introduced stringent, new national security laws that are aimed at tightening Beijing's control over the territory.

The decision to transfer backup data to Singapore was also in response to allegations made by local media that Naver's sensitive user data stored in Hong Kong was at risk of being leaked and that the Chinese government could access the data at any time.

China arrests over 100 people suspected of involvement in PlusToken cryptocurrency scam

Many of the alleged fraudsters had previously fled overseas.

China has arrested 109 individuals suspected of involvement in the PlusToken cryptocurrency fraud ring.

South Korea-based PlusToken was marketed as a high-yield investment opportunity for traders interested in cryptocurrencies. 9% to 18% in monthly returns were dangled in front of investors mainly based in China and South Korea, who then stored Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and EOS on the platform.

Members were encouraged to bring others to the fold in exchange for a commission, creating what is thought to be a Ponzi scheme of massive proportions.

Last year, the operators of PlusToken performed a suspected exit scam, in which roughly $3 billion in deposits was taken from up to four million users who suddenly found themselves unable to access their funds.
