⚠️ Scam Alert: You've Been Selected for 'Like of the Year 2020' Cash Prizes

Cybersecurity researchers have discovered a large-scale ongoing fraud scheme that lures unsuspecting Russian Internet users with promises of financial rewards to steal their payment card information.

According to researchers at Group-IB, the multi-stage phishing attack exploited the credibility of Russian Internet portal Rambler to trick users into participating in a fictitious "Like of the Year 2020" contest.

The development is a reminder that rewards-based social engineering campaigns continue to be an effective means to scam users, not to mention the leveraging the collected data to their financial advantage.

Under the "Like of the Year" scheme, users were invited to win a large cash prize, telling them they've been randomly selected after liking a post on social media platforms such as VKontakte.

The invites were sent via an email blast by hacking the mail servers of a fiscal data operator, which refers to a legal entity created to aggregate, store and process fiscal data to serve the Federal Tax Service of Russia.

China arrests over 100 people suspected of involvement in PlusToken cryptocurrency scam

Many of the alleged fraudsters had previously fled overseas.

China has arrested 109 individuals suspected of involvement in the PlusToken cryptocurrency fraud ring.

South Korea-based PlusToken was marketed as a high-yield investment opportunity for traders interested in cryptocurrencies. 9% to 18% in monthly returns were dangled in front of investors mainly based in China and South Korea, who then stored Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and EOS on the platform.

Members were encouraged to bring others to the fold in exchange for a commission, creating what is thought to be a Ponzi scheme of massive proportions.

Last year, the operators of PlusToken performed a suspected exit scam, in which roughly $3 billion in deposits was taken from up to four million users who suddenly found themselves unable to access their funds.

A tip from a kid helps detect iOS and Android scam apps’ 2.4 million downloads

Smartphone apps raked in ~$500,000, in part thanks to shilling on TikTok and Instagram

Researchers said that a tip from a child led them to discover aggressive adware and exorbitant prices lurking in iOS and Android smartphone apps with a combined 2.4 million downloads from the App Store and Google Play.

Posing as apps for entertainment, wallpaper images, or music downloads, some of the titles served intrusive ads even when an app wasn’t active. To prevent users from uninstalling them, the apps hid their icon, making it hard to identify where the ads were coming from. Other apps charged from $2 to $10 and generated revenue of more than $500,000, according to estimates from SensorTower, a smartphone-app intelligence service

The apps came to light after a girl found a profile on TikTok that was promoting what appeared to be an abusive app and reported it to Be Safe Online, a project in the Czech Republic that educates children about online safety. Acting on the tip, researchers from security firm Avast found 11 apps, for devices running both iOS and Android, that were engaged in similar scams.

You Should Be OUTRAGED By This CDC Lie! ( Video )

The whole premise of the COVID vaccine mandates was that everyone needed to be vaccinated because that would stop the spread of the virus. But it turns out that the CDC knew from the very beginning that the vaccines didn’t prevent transmission, so there was no need for mandates at all.

As Jimmy points out in this video, that didn’t stop CDC head Rochelle Walensky from lying about the vaccines’ efficacy so she could continue pushing mandates.
