China’s internet watchdog shuts down 13,600 mukbang accounts for promoting food waste

China’s internet watchdog has closed down 13,600 short video and live-streaming accounts, as the government doubles down on its campaign against food waste in popular online eating shows known as mukbang.

The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) said the accounts it shut down the past month were found to have breached the government’s policy against food waste, according to a notice posted by the agency on its WeChat account on Wednesday.

Mukbang, a Korean term that translates to “eating broadcasts”, initially gained popularity in South Korea in 2010 via online streaming channels such as AfreecaTV. It is a genre that has also become popular in China, where there is a vast audience hooked on short video-sharing services and live-streaming programmes on platforms like Douyin and Kuaishou.

Surveillance Company Explains How to Keep Facebook From Detecting Fake Accounts in Leaked Manual

A leaked manual from Blackdot Solutions, a British company that offers social media monitoring services, included a step-by-step guide on how to create fake profiles on Facebook and LinkedIn.

A company that markets an online investigations platform for government agencies, banks, and other businesses says publicly that it's based on open source intelligence. But a leaked user manual obtained by Motherboard shows that, in reality, the company teaches customers how to create fake Facebook and LinkedIn accounts to gather information about people that is normally protected by their privacy settings on those platforms.

The guide also explains how to avoid detection by Facebook.

How I stole the data in millions of people’s Google accounts

You don’t know me, but there’s a good chance I know you.

That’s because I have complete and total access to the private information in millions of peoples’ Google accounts. Emailed bank statements, medical records in Google Drive, Facebook chat records sent via Gmail, Google Voice voicemails, private pictures in Google Photos. The list goes on. None of them have any idea, and none of them ever will. Perhaps one of them is you.

So how did I do it? It all starts with an app I made.

For obvious reasons I won’t give away the name. It’s a pretty straightforward app, designed for fitness enthusiasts, with features like logging your pace during a run and guiding you through strength-building exercises. Like many apps, it requires the user to create an account before they can start using it. According to analytics, about 60% of users opt for the enticing ‘Sign up with Google’ button instead.
