How the Tech Giants Make Their Billions

At a glance, it may seem like the world’s biggest technology companies have a lot in common.

For starters, all five of the Big Tech companies (Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Microsoft, and Alphabet) have emerged as some of the most valuable publicly-traded companies in the world, with founders such as Jeff Bezos or Bill Gates sitting atop the global billionaire list.

These tech giants also have a consumer-facing aspect to their business that is front and center. With billions of people using their platforms globally, these companies leverage user data to tighten their grip even more on market share. At the same time, this data is a double-edged sword, as these same companies often find themselves in the crosshairs for mishandling personal information.

UK regulators take aim at Apple's search engine deal with Google

(Reuters) - The payments by Alphabet Inc’s Google to Apple Inc to be the default search engine on Apple’s Safari web browser create “a significant barrier to entry and expansion” for Google’s rivals in the search engine market, the UK markets regulator said in a report released on Wednesday.

Apple received the “substantial majority” of the 1.2 billion pounds ($1.5 billion) that Google paid to be the default search engine on a variety of devices in the United Kingdom in 2019, according to the report.

Google employees around the world have formed a new international union alliance called Alpha Global

Google employees have banded together to form an international union alliance, weeks after the formation of the minority
Alphabet Workers Union in the US.

This new international entity, called Alpha Global, has been formed with the UNI Global Union, a movement representing more than 20 million workers worldwide, and which is active in 10 countries, including the US, Germany, Sweden, and the UK.

It isn't clear how many temporary or contract workers with Google have joined Alpha Global, and it is likely to be a small fraction of the company's workforce at this stage. The Verge, which first reported the new union alliance, reports that the new entity won't have any legal bargaining power with Google.

Similarly in the US, the Alphabet Workers Union is a minority union meaning it cannot bargain with management and is not recognized by the US National Labor Relations board. It has more than 600 members, out of Google's estimated 130,000 contractors and temp workers.

Still, the emergence of Alpha Global indicates that white-collar workers at big tech firms are looking to cement an emerging wave of organization.

In a joint statement published on Monday, Alpha Global's officials said: "[Many] Alphabet workers have started on a path to unionization and collective bargaining. Workers are building democratic organizations to represent their interests, to struggle collectively, to create a structural counterbalance to corporate power, and to build a movement of tech workers across the industry."

Alphabet, Stop Protecting Harassers

Alphabet workers deserve the right to work in an environment free from their abusers.

Alphabet does not provide a safe environment for those who face harassment in the workplace. Even when HR confirms harassment, no action is taken to make the reporter safe. For example, Emi Nietfeld shared in the New York Times, “My harasser still sat next to me. My manager told me H.R. wouldn’t even make him change his desk, let alone work from home or go on leave.”
This is a long pattern where Alphabet protects the harasser instead of protecting the person harmed by the harassment. The person who reports harassment is forced to bear the burden, usually leaving Alphabet while their harasser stays or is rewarded for their behavior.

This is not news to many people at Alphabet:
