Forget fintech: the real threat to banks is Amazon and Facebook

"A bank with big ambitions opened in Britain last week. It has no high street branches, customers will simply download an app on their phones.

The approach taken by the US powerhouse JP Morgan for its Chase banking app illustrates the dramatic changes taking place on Britain’s high streets. Almost half of bank branches have closed in the past five years — leaving only 5,300, according to consumer group Which? — and the use of cash has plummeted during the pandemic. One in four people used cash once a month, or even less frequently, as Covid-19 took hold last year."

Project Nimbus: how Google and Amazon made billions from the Israeli occupation of Palestine

"We are anonymous because we fear reprisals." This sentence was part of a letter signed by 500 Google employees last October, denouncing their company's direct support for the Israeli government and military.

In their letter, the signatories protested a $1.2 billion contract between Google, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and the Israeli government that provides cloud services for the Israeli military and government that "enables increased surveillance and illegal data collection on Palestinians, and facilitates expansion of Israel's illegal settlements on Palestinian land."

This is Project Nimbus, which was announced in 2018 and went into effect in May 2021, in the first week of the Israeli war on besieged Gaza, which killed more than 250 Palestinians and injured many more.

Amazon has paid $25 million to settle federal allegations that tens of thousands of its employees had access to Alexa users’ voice recordings picked up by the smart device’s speakers.

US regulators made the allegation in a complaint filed by the Federal Trade Commission that has resulted in the $25 million settlement, according to Bloomberg News.

The FTC claimed that 30,000 Amazon employees were able to listen to Alexa customers’ recordings between the period covering August 2018 and September 2019.

FBI File On #Jeff #Bezos' Grandfather, A #DARPA Co-Founder, Has Been Destroyed

What's not widely known is that #Amazon founder Jeff Bezos' grandfather, Lawrence Preston Gise, helped form the Pentagon's supersecret Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA—renamed DARPA) in 1958. Years later, DARPA developed the internet and spurred breakthroughs in high-speed networking, voice recognition, and internet search.

One year before Gise died in 1995, Bezos founded Amazon in the garage of his Bellevue, Washington home.

John Greenewald Jr., who operates The Black Vault, a website dedicated to revealing declassified government documents through obtaining Freedom of Information Act requests, posted on X that he went after Gise's "FBI file, but found out if there was one, it has been destroyed." 

News website Leading Report's Patrick Webb commented on Greenewald's findings, saying, "There has long been speculation that DARPA has been involved in the creation of many popular big tech companies, using "frontmen" for the allusion of a startup led by outsiders." 

Questions swirl about DARPA's involvement in creating Amazon, given Bezos' grandfather's connection to the secret agency.
