NOT DELIVERING Amazon ending ‘hero pay’ in Canada slashing hourly wages and cutting double overtime pay despite coronavirus outbreaks

AMAZON is cancelling "hero pay" for its Canadian workforce, despite rising infections in its warehouses - and as CEO Jeff
Bezos prepares to become the world's first trillionaire.

The pay was granted in recognition of working in hazardous conditions during the pandemic, and equated to a $2 wage increase and double overtime pay.

The announcement was made in an internal company memo, obtained by PressProgress, and came as a number of workers tested positive in warehouses across the country.

“We are providing a final extension of the temporary $2/hour pay increase and double overtime pay through May 30.”

After that, the memo continues: “we will return to our regular pay and overtime structure.”

On May 1, an outbreak at an Alberta warehouse was declared, after five people tested positive.

Former NSA chief Keith Alexander has joined Amazon’s board of directors

Alexander was the public face of US surveillance during the Snowden leaks

Keith Alexander is joining Amazon’s board of directors, the company revealed in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing today. (Alexander has also been added to the company board’s official site.) A former director of the National Security Agency and the first commander of the US Cyber Command, Alexander served as the public face of US data collection during the Edward Snowden leaks, but he retired from public service in 2013.

Alexander is a controversial figure for many in the tech community because of his involvement in the widespread surveillance systems revealed by the Snowden leaks. Those systems included PRISM, a broad data collection program that compromised systems at Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, and Facebook — but not Amazon.

Alexander was broadly critical of reporting on the Snowden leaks, even suggesting that reporters should be legally restrained from covering the documents. “I think it’s wrong that that newspaper reporters have all these documents, the 50,000-whatever they have and are selling them and giving them out as if these — you know it just doesn’t make sense,” Alexander in an interview in 2013. “We ought to come up with a way of stopping it. I don’t know how to do that. That’s more of the courts and the policymakers but, from my perspective, it’s wrong to allow this to go on.”

Alexander’s board spot will also give Amazon new expertise in defense contracting, an area of particular focus for the company in recent years. Amazon was a leading candidate for a recent $10 billion cloud computing contract with the Pentagon, but it ultimately lost out to Microsoft. The company is currently engaged in a lawsuit against the federal government in connection with the contract, alleging that President Donald Trump’s personal statements against Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos biased the process against Amazon.

Amazon Allegedly Forced Pregnant People to Risk Miscarriages or Lose Their Jobs

Four workers at an Oklahoma City Amazon fulfillment center report that the company routinely takes months to honor doctor’s orders for lighter assignments for pregnant people, putting employees in the position of either risking miscarriage or taking unpaid leave and facing the prospect of being fired.

A pregnant Amazon worker at the Oklahoma facility named Michelle Posey told Vice that in June, she presented her managers at Amazon a “modified duty” letter from her doctor advising that she not lift weights greater than 15 pounds. The company responded that due to covid, there were no available positions to accommodate the request. After a supervisor allegedly told her “If you can’t do your job, why don’t you leave?,” Posey says she took an unpaid leave of absence during which someone who worked for Amazon contacted her and instructed her to ask her gynecologist to “lift the restrictions.” When the doctor did not, Posey says she couldn’t work until September, five months after submitting her modified duty request, when the distribution center finally reassigned her and paid her just $500 in back wages.

Three other employees who wished to remain anonymous shared similar stories, with one pregnant worker telling Vice’s Motherboard that her doctor-ordered accommodation request for a 20-pound weight limit for pushing, pulling, and lifting along with a 10-minute break was only honored after multiple visits to the emergency room for vaginal bleeding. Another says her car was repossessed and she faced shut off notices from utility companies over unpaid bills as she took unpaid leave rather than go against doctor’s orders waiting for her request for reassignment to be approved by Amazon.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos to step down this year, replaced by AWS chief Andy Jassy

Jeff
Bezos will step down as CEO of Amazon in the third quarter of this year, becoming executive chairman of the company he conceived 27 years ago on a road trip to Seattle, and turning over day-to-day operations to longtime lieutenant Andy Jassy, who made his mark as the leader of Amazon’s fast-growing cloud business.

Here’s a statement from Bezos:

Amazon is what it is because of invention. We do crazy things together and then make them normal. We pioneered customer reviews, 1-Click, personalized recommendations, Prime’s insanely-fast shipping, Just Walk Out shopping, the Climate Pledge, Kindle, Alexa, marketplace, infrastructure cloud computing, Career Choice, and much more. If you do it right, a few years after a surprising invention, the new thing has become normal. People yawn. That yawn is the greatest compliment an inventor can receive. When you look at our financial results, what you’re actually seeing are the long-run cumulative results of invention. Right now I see Amazon at its most inventive ever, making it an optimal time for this transition.

FBI File On #Jeff #Bezos' Grandfather, A #DARPA Co-Founder, Has Been Destroyed

What's not widely known is that #Amazon founder Jeff Bezos' grandfather, Lawrence Preston Gise, helped form the Pentagon's supersecret Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA—renamed DARPA) in 1958. Years later, DARPA developed the internet and spurred breakthroughs in high-speed networking, voice recognition, and internet search.

One year before Gise died in 1995, Bezos founded Amazon in the garage of his Bellevue, Washington home.

John Greenewald Jr., who operates The Black Vault, a website dedicated to revealing declassified government documents through obtaining Freedom of Information Act requests, posted on X that he went after Gise's "FBI file, but found out if there was one, it has been destroyed."

News website Leading Report's Patrick Webb commented on Greenewald's findings, saying, "There has long been speculation that DARPA has been involved in the creation of many popular big tech companies, using "frontmen" for the allusion of a startup led by outsiders."

Questions swirl about DARPA's involvement in creating Amazon, given Bezos' grandfather's connection to the secret agency.

The Seven Richest Billionaires Are All Zionists Using the CIA to Control the Media

Great investigative report by MintPress News about who is purchasing all the media companies today.

The Seven Richest Billionaires Are All Media Barons

Excerpts:

Trump loyalist and CIA contractor Larry Ellison’s purchase of CNN appears imminent, and marks the latest venture into media for the world’s second-richest individual.

But Ellison is not alone. Indeed, the world’s seven richest individuals are all now powerful media barons, controlling what the world sees, reads, and hears, marking a new chapter in oligarchical control over society and striking another blow at a free, independent press and diversity of opinion.

Paramount Skydance– an Ellison-owned company– is in pole position to purchase #Warner Brothers Discovery, a conglomerate that controls gigantic film and television studios, streaming services like HBO Max and Discovery+, franchises like DC Comics, and TV networks such as #HBO, TNT, #Discovery Channel, TLC, Food Network, and #CNN. This lead is largely due to Ellison’s proximity to President Trump, who will ultimately have to sign off on such a deal.

Ellison has already spoken to senior White House officials about axing CNN hosts and content that Trump is said to dislike, including anchors, Erin Burnett and Brianna Keilar. It is this willingness to completely reorientate the network’s political direction that has made him the White House’s preferred purchaser of Warner Brothers Discovery. He is reportedly so wealthy that he can afford to pay in cash.

Immediately upon being appointed CEO of CBS News, Larry’s son, David, began drastically reorientating the network’s political outlook, firing staff, pushing it to become pro-Trump, and appointing self-described “Zionist fanatic” Bari Weiss as its editor-in-chief.

Ellison is an enthusiastic supporter of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with whom he vacationed with on his private island in Hawaii. So impressed was he with the embattled prime minister that he offered him a seat on Oracle’s board, replete with a yearly salary of $450,000.

Ellison is the largest single donor to the israeli Terrorist Forces (ITF). In 2017 alone, he pledged $16.6 million to build a new training facility for IDF soldiers, whom he described as defending “our home.”

David Ellison is no less ardent a #zionist, and even met with a top Israeli general in order to aid a project spying on American citizens, according to an investigation by The Grayzone. The scheme was aimed at attacking American citizens participating in pro-Palestine activism in the face of Israel’s attack on Gaza. The documents also mention Brin’s name as a potential collaborator in the plan.

We are living in an era of unprecedented global inequality. Together, these seven individuals– #Musk, #Ellison, #Page, #Brin, #Bezos, #Zuckerberg and #Arnault– control more wealth than the bottom 50% of humanity (over 4 billion people) combined.

Sitting on heretofore unimaginable fortunes, they have begun buying up assets, including media outlets, at record pace.

No billionaire, however, is more intimately connected to the CIA than Larry Ellison. Ellison began his career by working with the CIA on a database system called Project Oracle. In 1977, he would co-found tech giant Oracle (named after his previous project).

The CIA was #Oracle’s only customer for some time, before Ellison branched out and began to win contracts with other branches of the national security state, including Navy Intelligence, Air Force Intelligence, and the #NSA.

That close partnership continues to this day. In 2020, the company won a 15-year contract with the CIA and 16 other U.S. intelligence agencies worth tens of billions of dollars. And today, its upper ranks are filled with former CIA executives. One example of this is Leon #Panetta, former #CIA Director and Secretary of Defense, who sits on its board of directors.
