The 1st of June 2023 saw perhaps the most exciting development in the targeted spyware research space in recent memory.
The Russian government’s Federal Security Service (FSB) released a statement indicating that they had detected a hacking campaign by the US National Security Agency (NSA) that compromised “thousands” of Apple iPhones within Russia. The FSB’s statement also, bizarrely, asserted collusion between the NSA and Apple, throwing the veracity of the rest of the FSB’s claims into question. Since I reside in a Five Eyes country and have publicly presented four cases I led on China’s APT41 attacking organisations in ASEAN, particularly concerning China’s cyber and political strategies, I was curious to explore what China publishes about Five Eyes operations. This led me down a rabbit hole of research into TTPs that Chinese cybersecurity entities have attributed to the NSA – or, as they coin “APT-C-40”.
These insights stem from extensive research I did on Weixin containing intelligence reports published by China’s Qihoo 360, Pangu Lab, and the National Computer Virus Emergency Response Center (CVERC).

On Twitter yesterday Glenn Greenwald reposted a video, filmed by "Master Ferraz" on May 31st, 2024, which he then quickly removed.
In the video he is seen on his knees wearing a schoolgirl's skirt, being verbally berated, kissing the mans feet and licking spit off the ground. He then gets on his laptop, when instructed to transfer the man money via PayPal in an act of "findom", with what appears to be a meth pipe laying on his bed. His email shows transfers of approximately 45,000 Brazilian Real ($9000 USD).
David Miranda, Greenwald's partner and former Brazilian parliamentarian, passed away on May 9th, 2023 leaving their two adopted children behind in his custody.
Questions remain: It is likely enough the video was also in someone else's hands, used in a blackmail scheme.
As Editor of the '#Intercept', he was accused by colleagues of not publishing certain #Snowden #NSA, #Vault7, and Qatar leaks he had committed to.
