Big Tech’s Morality Police Are Going After Adult Content

“We got no warning, no violation warning or anything like that. It just was gone the next day.”

An online decency campaign has discreetly swept the internet over the past two years: Tumblr dropped porn, Reddit removed certain threads, and Facebook effectively banned sexually suggestive content, including some emojis. Hundreds of adult performers and erotica artists have also been targeted by the online morality police — and suddenly lost their lucrative accounts.

Artist, model and photographer Kate “Kato” Lambert said she got absolutely no warning before Instagram took down her popular Instagram account featuring a wide range of steampunk-infused erotica. It was just hours after she’d posted a photo that showed a scantily clad woman. “We got no warning, no violation warning or anything like that. It just was gone the next day.” Lambert also says she’s lost around $80,000 in revenue as a result of her account being removed for two months.

I Tried to Live Without the Tech Giants. It Was Impossible.

As lawmakers debate whether Apple, Google, Facebook, and Amazon are monopolies, a reporter recalls her attempt to avoid interacting with the companies.

The chief executives of Amazon, Facebook, Google and Apple were called before a House antitrust committee this week, ostensibly to answer questions about whether they have too much power and whether that hurts consumers.

The tech bosses, who appeared via videoconference, fended off questions about being “cyber barons,” saying they have plenty of competition and that consumers have other options for the services they offer.

Google's web app plans collide with Apple's iPhone, Safari rules

The struggle is over the future of the web.

Google and Apple, which already battle over mobile operating systems, are opening a new front in their fight. How that plays out may determine the future of the web.

Google was born on the web, and its business reflects its origin. The company depends on the web for search and advertising revenue. So it isn't a surprise that Google sees the web as key to the future of software. Front and center are web apps, interactive websites with the same power as conventional apps that run natively on operating systems like Windows, Android, MacOS and iOS.

Exclusive: Trump administration asks court to dismiss Big Tech's challenge to social media executive order

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Trump administration has filed a motion asking a court to dismiss a lawsuit against the president’s executive order targeting social media companies, calling it a “profound misunderstanding,” according to a copy of the motion seen by Reuters.

The lawsuit was brought in June by the Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT), a Washington-based tech group funded by Facebook Inc, Alphabet Inc’s Google and Twitter Inc. It marked the first major legal test of President Donald Trump’s directive.

Tech giants are the ‘winners’ of the coronavirus crisis and should pay more tax, Europe official says

Big Tech has to pay a “fair amount” of taxes in Europe, especially as they are the “real winners” of the coronavirus crisis, a top European official told CNBC Saturday.

His comments come amid an ongoing rift between the United States and the European Union over the taxation of companies such as Apple, Alphabet and Amazon.

“It is a major problem,” Paolo Gentiloni, European Commissioner for economics and taxation, told CNBC at the European House Ambrosetti Forum, acknowledging the difficulty in overcoming differences with the United States.

Big Tech’s Domination of Business Reaches New Heights

As the economy contracts and many companies struggle to survive, the biggest tech companies are amassing wealth and influence in ways unseen in decades.

American tech titans flew high before the coronavirus pandemic, making billions of dollars a year.

Now, the upheaval has lifted them to new heights, putting the industry in a position to dominate American business in a way unseen since the days of railroads.

A rally in technology stocks elevated the S&P 500 stock index to a record high on Tuesday even as the pandemic crushes the broader economy. The stocks of Apple, Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft and Facebook, the five largest publicly traded companies in America, rose 37 percent in the first seven months this year, while all the other stocks in the S&P 500 fell a combined 6 percent, according to Credit Suisse.

The Big Tech Extortion Racket

How Google, Amazon, and Facebook control our lives

Popular histories present the Boston Tea Party as a rebellion against taxes. Yet what the colonists objected to more than anything was the idea of an all-powerful corporate middleman regulating commerce. They viewed the 1773 protest in Boston Harbor as a victory for liberty and a blow against the British East India Company’s trade monopoly.

That corporation owed its dominance not to any proprietary advantage but to an exclusive British government charter. The artificial nature of this power was made clear soon after the Congress of the new United States signed a peace treaty with Britain. Six weeks later, the American ship Empress of China sailed from New York, bound for Canton. When the ship returned, its traders sold tea and porcelain on the open market. Without the active backing of the British state, the East India Company could not stop the sale—let alone determine who sold what, or where and how they sold it, in America.

Poll: majority of Americans concerned about Big Tech’s economic, political power

Republican voters were more likely to say they were somewhat or very concerned about the tech firms.

About 65 percent of likely U.S. voters think the economic power held by tech companies like Amazon, Google, Facebook is a problem for the U.S. economy, according to a survey on antitrust and the tech industry to be released Thursday.

The responses: Republican voters were more likely to say they were somewhat or very concerned about the tech firms than those who identify as Democrats or independents.

Seventy percent of the respondents said they think tech companies have too much political power, with Republicans most likely to agree with the statement.

Overall, 56 percent said they would strongly or somewhat support breaking up tech companies to promote competition, compared with 26 percent who said they oppose or strongly oppose such a move and 19 percent who didn’t offer a view.

Brussels’ plan to rein in Big Tech takes shape

The Commission is drawing up a list of actions tech companies can and can’t do, especially for the most powerful.

The EU is preparing for its biggest-ever effort to regulate the tech industry — drawing up extensive rules to govern what tech companies can and cannot do.

Three European Commission internal documents, seen by POLITICO, indicate that Brussels is drawing up a wide range of legislative tools to prohibit what it sees as anti-competitive behavior and oblige companies to do more to protect their users against illegal content and activities.

"This crisis has shown the role and the systemic character of certain platforms that often behave as if they were too big to care about legitimate concerns about their roles: too big to care," Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton told the European Parliament this week, an apparent reference to "too big to fail," a criticism leveled at powerful banks after the 2008 financial crisis.

The Commission is expected to present its proposals, known collectively as the Digital Services Act (DSA), in December. The legislative package will include content moderation requirements applying to a wide range of online platforms, as well as so-called ex ante rules for the largest tech companies.

The plans come as Big Tech companies are under intense scrutiny on both sides of the Atlantic.

Tech coalition working to create digital COVID-19 vaccination passport

A coalition of health and technology organizations are working to develop a digital COVID-19 vaccination passport to allow businesses, airlines and countries to check if people have received the vaccine.

The Vaccination Credential Initiative, announced on Thursday, is formulating technology to confirm vaccinations in the likelihood that some governments will mandate people provide proof of their shots in order to enter the nation.

The organization hopes the technology will allow people to "demonstrate their health status to safely return to travel, work, school and life while protecting their data privacy."

The initiative, which includes members like Microsoft, Oracle and U.S. nonprofit Mayo Clinic, is using the work from member Commons Project’s international digital document that verifies a person has tested negative for COVID-19, the Financial Times reported.

Hello and welcome back to the world of zany patents from Big Tech! While 2020 is still dragging on (I know it's 2021, but you can't tell me 2020 is over until I can go anywhere other than the grocery store), at least there are still great new patents to uncover. And there's some fascinating ones this week, including Facebook wanting to make clothes like real in games, Microsoft trying to make sports more inclusive and Google wanting to make it easier to spy on your parents. If that's something you want to do.

And remember: The big tech companies file all kinds of crazy patents for things, and though most never amount to anything, some end up defining the future.

Spy pixels in emails have become endemic

The use of "invisible" tracking tech in emails is now "endemic", according to a messaging service that analysed its traffic at the BBC's request.

Hey's review indicated that two-thirds of emails sent to its users' personal accounts contained a "spy pixel", even after excluding for spam.

Its makers said that many of the largest brands used email pixels, with the exception of the "big tech" firms.

Defenders of the trackers say they are a commonplace marketing tactic.

And several of the companies involved noted their use of such tech was mentioned within their wider privacy policies.

‼️ Emails pixels can be used to log:

if and when an email is opened

how many times it is opened

what device or devices are involved

the user's rough physical location, deduced from their internet protocol (IP) address - in some cases making it possible to see the street the recipient is on

This information can then be used to determine the impact of a specific email campaign, as well as to feed into more detailed customer profiles.

Hey's co-founder David Heinemeier Hansson says they amount to a "grotesque invasion of privacy".

Google's short-lived data-advantage

There's a lot of ways to think about the movement to tame Big Tech, but one of the more useful divisions to explore is the "Night of the Comet" people versus the "Don't Believe the Criti-Hype" people.

This is a division over the value of the data that Google, Facebook and other large tech firms have amassed over the years – data on their users, sure, but also data on the advertisers and publishers they serve with their ad-tech platforms.

Big Tech companies and their investors are really bullish on the value of this commercial data-advantage: they say that spying on us – the users – lets them manipulate our opinions and activities so that we buy or believe the things their advertisers pay them to push.

More quietly, their investors believe that the data-advantage extends to publishers and advertisers, a deep storehouse of data that makes it effectively impossible for anyone else to do the precision targeted that Big Tech manages, which is why they have such fat margins.

Google to Start Censoring Telegram

Fake news or justifiable warning? You be the judge.

I saw a message today stating the “Google Play Store is now censoring certain pages on Telegram if you downloaded the app through them.” The message suggested a simple workaround to download the app directly from telegram.org/android.

👉🏼 Here’s the message in its entirety:

"Google Play Store is now censoring certain pages on Telegram if you downloaded the app through them.

To get around this simply download the Android app directly from Telegram themselves. Less censorship and more updates.

Before you delete the Google play store Telegram app, install the new one directly from Telegram which will send you a security code to your Telegram messages. Once you have the code from the old app and you enter it into the new one, you can then delete the Google play store version.
"

Having seen videos I consider important disappearing from YouTube recently I wouldn’t put it past Google to dupe the chattle into downloading a doctored version of Telegram in order to protect people stamp out free speech in order to suppress the fast-rising global freedom movement organizing on Telegram.

Whether or not the message I shared above was true or false is less important to me than maintaining free speech. And so I’d like to share a few resources I’ve learned about from being on Telegram which can help you do just that:
