Canada wants to punish ‘online hate crimes’ with life sentences

Trudea’s Liberal Party has tabled a bill seeking to pressure online platforms into reducing exposure to a broad range of content.

The new criminal code would allow punishments for standalone hate crimes or content advocating genocide to increase from five years to a maximum of a life sentence.

“The hatred that festers online is radicalizing people and that radicalization has real-world impacts for my community, and so many other communities,” said Justice Minister Arif Virani.

FBI Automatically Deleted Communications With Twitter

Elon Musk revealed during an interview that the FBI had a portal that would automatically delete its conversations with Twitter after two weeks.

Even though Musk now owns Twitter, he said, "we actually don't know what was said there."

Musk said this could potentially violate the Freedom of Information Act and raises questions about the nature of the conversations the FBI was having with Twitter.

Musk said the censorship was "coming from multiple parts of the government. From the State Department, the FBI, Homeland Security, from really many, many parts of the government. It wasn't just one arm of the government."

Telegram to Introduce "Fact-Checking Feature"

The source code of #Telegram for Android has revealed lines indicating the development of a new feature called "Fact Check." It appears that this feature will be implemented in partnership with government-assigned fact checking agencies.

- The "Fact Check" feature will allow additional clarifying information to be attached to messages. However, it will function differently from Twitter's Community Notes, which might seem similar at first glance.

- The government in your country will be able to appoint an agency to conduct fact-checking on public Telegram channel posts. This agency will have full control over the content of these fact check blocks, while regular users will not be able to influence or have a say in the notes. By clicking on the "What is this?" tool-tip, details about the agency providing the fact-check will be shown.

- Unlike Telegram's "Fact Check" feature, Twitter's Community Notes are created and evaluated by regular users, and the most useful notes are selected by an algorithm based on votes from readers with diverse political views.

EU probes Telegram, because size matters for regulators • The Register

"The European Union is reportedly looking into messaging app Telegram, and whether it has more users than the platform lets on.

EU officials are currently in discussions with Telegram concerning its user base according to Bloomberg, which cited unnamed sources. While Telegram officially claims it has just 41 million European users, local regulators are skeptical and suspect the actual user amount is higher. This is particularly relevant since platforms with 45 million or more users (termed very large online platforms or VLOPs) operating in the EU are subject to stricter rules of the EU Digital Services Act (DSA)."

Should Telegram be found to have more than 45 million EU users, it would qualify as a VLOP and potentially be responsible for the content hosted on the service.

Running afoul of the DSA could result in big fines up to 6 percent of revenue, or even banishment from the EU, if Telegram refuses to cooperate.
