Our own military history contains many examples where our knowledge of the enemy, or lack of knowledge, directly led to victory or defeat.
The role of R&S has not changed on the modern battlefield; if anything, it has become even more important. Battles at combat training centers prove that a good R&S effort is critical to successful attacks. On the other hand, a poor R&S effort almost guarantees defeat for the commander[...]

One of the major themes of the novel is the difficulty experienced by former soldiers trying to revert to civilian life after having experienced extreme combat situations. This internal destruction can be found as early as the first chapter as Paul comments that, although all the boys are young, their youth has already left them. In addition, the massive loss of life and negligible gains from the fighting are constantly emphasized. Soldiers' lives are thrown away by their commanding officers who are stationed comfortably away from the front, ignorant of and indifferent to the suffering and terror of the front lines.

Alongside the creation of the State of Israel, the end of the war led to one of the largest forced migrations in modern history. Around a million people were expelled from their homes at gunpoint, civilians were massacred, and hundreds of Palestinian villages deliberately destroyed. Though the truth about the mass expulsion has been systematically distorted and suppressed, had it taken place in the twenty-first century it could only have been called ‘ethnic cleansing'. Prominent Israeli academic Ilan Pappe argues passionately for the international recognition of this tragedy.

My People Shall Live details Khaled’s early years with her family as they fled the catastrophe that engulfed the Palestinians after the creation of Israel.
She then lived as a refugee in Lebanon and Kuwait, joined the left-wing Arab Nationalist Movement in Beirut at 15, and later became part of the Marxist-Leninist Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestinians (#PFLP).
More than anything, My People Shall Live depicts the events, tragedies, and injustices that create a "terrorist" in the eyes of the Israeli government and its allies.
