📺 Unboxing Social Data Algorithms - #facebook #tracking #exposed

Today I want to talk about a project named ALEX, which is the acronym for Algorithm Exposed, and one of its first output: a tool for scientific analysis of the social network personalisation algorithm, that we call fbtrex, Facebook-tracking-exposed. It works by collecting what Facebook sends to you, as your timeline. Because is personalised, it can be obtained as evidence and used to understand the algorithm logic.

ALEX - fbtrex - Facebook-tracking-exposed

Our vision is to increase transparency behind personalization algorithms, so that people can have more effective control of their online Facebook experience and more awareness of the information to which they are exposed.

It works by collecting what Facebook sends to you, as your timeline. Because is personalised, it can be obtained as evidence and used to understand the algorithm logic.

Our mission is to help researchers assess how current filtering mechanisms work and how personalization algorithms should be modified in order to minimize the dangerous social effects.

Millions of Telegram Users’ Data Exposed on Darknet

Telegram’s built-in contact import feature was exploited to leak the personal data of millions of users onto the darknet.

Telegram, a major privacy-focused messaging app, has suffered a data leak that exposed some personal data of its users on the darknet.

A database containing the personal data of millions of Telegram users has been posted on a darknet forum. The issue was first reported by Russian-language tech publication Kod.ru on Tuesday.

According to the report, the database contains phone numbers and unique Telegram user IDs. It remains unclear exactly how many users' data was leaked while the database file is about 900 megabytes.

About 40% of entries in the database should be relevant
Telegram has reportedly acknowledged the existence of the leaked database to Kod.ru. The database was collected through exploiting Telegram’s built-in contacts import feature at registration, Telegram reportedly said.

Telegram noted that the data in the leaked database is mostly outdated. According to the report, 84% of data entries in the database were collected before mid-2019. As such, at least 60% of the database is outdated, Telegram declared in the report.

Additionally, 70% of leaked accounts came from Iran, while the remaining 30% were based in Russia.

NZBgeek Has Been Hacked Leaving Private User Data Exposed

Popular Usenet indexer NZBGeek has been hacked. The site's database was copied exposing the personal details of all users. The hackers also managed to install a keylogger, opening the door to further abuse. The site's operators recommend that users should secure their online accounts as well as credit cards that were used on the site recently.

Despite the growing popularity of pirate streaming sites and services, classic file-sharing tools continue to have a smaller but dedicated audience.

This is true for BitTorrent as well as Usenet. In the latter category, NZBGeek is one of the largest players as it provides an indexing service that helps users to find content.

NZBGeek is a private community to which users can sign up without any charges. However, those who donate get some extra features that will help to sift through the more than 500,000 NZBs indexed by the site.

NZBGeek Hacked
The site generally operates smoothly but last week something changed. After initially becoming unreachable, the problem was initially clear but after a while, the operators put up a message stating that there were hosting related issues. Yesterday, however, things turned from bad to worse.

“It’s with a heavy heart that we must admit that we have had a breach,” the site informed its users. “If you have recently used your card or payment with us we suggest changing your credentials and card info as soon as possible.”
