Spanish Congress approves "digital decree" The "gag law" to control the Internet?

The Permanent #Commission of the #Congress has approved with the favorable votes of #PSOE, #PP and #Citizens, the Royal Decree-Law 14/2019 of October 31, of urgent measures for the #digital #administration. A tremendously controversial #rule, unprecedented in #Spanish #democracy and that is raising blisters in all areas, as some #lawyers and #activists believe that it is an unconstitutional rule that violates fundamental rights.

The so-called "#digitaldecree" will allow the #Government to assume (temporarily) the direct management of electronic communications networks and services in certain exceptional cases that may affect public order, public security and national security. In practice, the Government will be able to cut off communications and networks such as the Internet in all or part of the territory without a prior court order, alleging an alteration of 'public order'.

The approval entails the adaptation of section 6 of article 4 of the General Telecommunications Law, the wording of which will literally read as follows: "The Government, on an exceptional and transitory basis, may agree to the assumption by the General State Administration of the direct management or intervention of electronic communications networks and services in certain exceptional cases that may affect public order, public security and national security. This exceptional power [...] may affect any infrastructure, associated resource or element or level of the network or service that is necessary to preserve or restore public order, public security and national security.

Popular torrenting site YTS provides IP address logs to copyright lawyers to extort you with

The second largest torrent site in the world, YTS, is actively working with copyright infringement lawyers to extort cash from torrent downloaders. This isn’t the only historical instance of a torrent site storing IP addresses to be used against torrenters but it is a confirmation of a disturbing new precedent which may stand on shaky legal ground.

In the past, torrent sites like The Pirate Bay (TPB) have stored IP addresses and even given them up as a way to pinpoint original uploaders of certain torrents. There have also been instances where YTS has given up logs in court for ongoing cases against downloaders. πŸ‘‰πŸΌ The most recent revelation, though, is that YTS is also giving these logs to the Culpepper law firm in Hawaii so that Culpepper can send β€œPay-Up-Or-Else Threats” to those that have used YTS, before a case is even filed. πŸ‘ˆπŸΌ

That’s right… This time around, YTS is giving up the IP addresses and emails of downloaders to a copyright infringement lawyer who then turns around and tries to extort torrenters for cash settlements. TorrentFreak has been covering these revelations from YTS as part of an ongoing copyright infringement case against a US veteran. Now, TorrentFreak has seen a letter which confirms that torrenters using YTS are being caught up by what TorrentFreak calls β€œthe most extraordinary business/legal arrangement ever witnessed in the piracy scene.” YTS provides the logs to Culpepper, who then sends the YTS user a threat of a case which can be settled for around $1,000.

MPA Lawyers Are Trying to Shut Down Pirate Anime Giant Nyaa.si

TorrentFreak understands that the MPA has delivered cease-and-desist letters to several individuals with alleged connections to massive anime torrent site Nyaa. Claiming that they are members of the so-called "Anime Cartel", the notices make several demands including the total shutdown of the site plus cash settlements totaling tens of thousands of dollars.

Every year, TorrentFreak compiles a list of the most popular torrent sites in the world. The vast majority are general purpose sites that link to a wide variety of content, meaning they are of interest to most people.

However, a major outlier is Nyaa, a site focused on anime and other East Asian media. That makes its position among the top five torrent sites in the whole world even more impressive since it derives large volumes of traffic from a relative niche audience

Located at Nyaa.si, the platform is a reincarnation of the now-defunct Nyaa.se and like its predecessor has had its fair share of copyright-related issues. In 2018, Nyaa.si was kicked out by Cloudflare for alleged abuse of its copyright systems, a claim denied by the site. Now, however, things have become much more personal.
