This IoT Mesh Network Watches You As You Shop - Without Cameras

We built an IoT
mesh network to help understand shopper behavior, without using cameras.

Online retailers know a lot about how their customers are navigating their virtual stores. Offline retailers are not so lucky.

Together with consumer behavior experts B:Clarity and a multinational home appliance brand we built a system to help understand customer movement and behavior.

The system consists of wireless sensors that are installed in electronics stores. A few hundred sensors in each store.

💡 There are two types of sensors:

👉🏼
Vibration sensors. That trigger when someone is trying out a product.

👉🏼 Light sensors. Trigger when someone is standing in front of a product.

With these sensors, we can see what items are most popular, how it correlates to sales data – and how to take action to improve sales.

But without collecting any personally identifiable information.

Security risks of Bluetooth

Man-in-the-middle attacks (#MITM):
Bluetooth connections can be susceptible to eavesdropping attacks if strong encryption is not used. Older Bluetooth versions (before 4.2) are particularly risky.

#Bluejacking & #bluesnarfing:
Attackers could try to send unwanted messages (bluejacking) or even steal data from devices (bluesnarfing).

Traceability:
Bluetooth devices often send unique #MAC addresses, which makes users traceable.

Weak standard pairing methods:
Many devices still use simple PINs or confirm connections without verification (e.g. "Just Works" mode with Bluetooth LE).

Risks specific to Bluetooth mesh networks

Mesh networks increase the attack surface:
Each device in the mesh acts as a relay, which means that a compromised device could influence the entire data traffic.

Lack of end-to-end encryption:
If the app/software does not implement additional encryption, messages can be forwarded in plain text.

Decentralized management:
Without centralized control, it is difficult to identify and remove malicious nodes.

In this video, I build a #Reticulum #RNode and prove that completely different radios — #LoRa and Wi-Fi — can communicate through a hardware-agnostic networking stack. Reticulum routes traffic above the radio layer, automatically bridging dissimilar frequencies, interfaces, and modulation types. I then run it over Wi-Fi HaLow Haven nodes to create a long-range, encrypted IP #mesh with no traditional infrastructure.

Finally, I push it further by running #ATAK across the network, demonstrating a fully open-source, decentralized communication stack in action.

In my last video, I introduced #Reticulum—an open-source protocol that could allow anyone to build networks without relying on traditional internet infrastructure. But there was one big question left unanswered: how far can it actually go?

In this video, I start with a simple setup inside my house and begin pushing the limits—testing communication across rooms, neighborhoods, and beyond using WiFi HaLow and #mesh networking. The goal is simple: see if it’s possible to send real messages across distance without depending on ISPs, centralized servers, or the internet as we know it.

I tested whether consumer apps like FaceTime, Signal, WhatsApp, and Zoom work on an off-grid #HaLow #mesh #network with zero internet.

The key discovery: FaceTime and Signal connect peer-to-peer if they can find each other on any local network — Apple's servers aren't in the loop. The climax was a two-car highway test where Emilia and I held a FaceTime call at 70 mph, bridged only by Haven nodes and sub-gigahertz antennas. The

conclusion: the "loophole" isn't a hack — it's the original peer-to-peer design we forgot about once we handed the internet to five companies.
