Raid on Amazon in Austria

The financial police seal off a warehouse to check the chauffeurs of the delivery vans. In a short time, dozens of violations are discovered.

Amazon Austria had to tolerate a raid on Tuesday in the presence of a journalist of all people. Amazon was hosting a reporter from the daily newspaper Die Presse on a tour of a distribution centre in Lower Austria when suddenly more than 60 officers of the financial police were on the mat. Their suspicion of dummy companies and illicit work was not directed directly against Amazon, but rather against its subcontractors for delivery trips.

The authorities occupied all entrances and exits of the Amazon distribution centre in Großrebersdorf and checked all chauffeurs for two hours. As reported by the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation, 174 employees of no less than 36 companies were treated by the authorities.

One of the biggest online piracy groups in the world taken down

On 25 August, an alleged criminal network of copyright infringing hackers, mainly responsible for pirating movies and hosting illegal digital content worldwide was dismantled in a coordinated action between US authorities and their counterparts in 18 countries around the world, with Europol and Eurojust support. Sixty servers were taken down in North America, Europe and Asia and several of the main suspects were arrested.

Streamed prior to release

The Sparks Group obtained DVDs and Blu-ray discs of unreleased content and compromised the copyright protections on the discs to reproduce and upload the content publically to online servers. It is believed that the piracy group, under investigation since September 2016, had successfully reproduced and disseminated hundreds of movies and TV programmes prior to their retail release date, including nearly every movie released by major production studios in the US. The Sparks Group has caused tens of millions of US dollars in losses to film production studios, mainly to the US movie, television, and supporting industries, from the copyright infringement.

German police raid 50 homes in child porn investigation

BERLIN (AP) — A thousand police officers in Germany raided the homes of 50 people as part of a nationwide crackdown on the online sharing and distribution of child pornography, Cologne police said Wednesday.

None of the 48 men and two women suspected of involvement was arrested during Tuesday’s raids, but investigators seized around 2,000 phones, computers and other devices upon which images were stored, police said.

The suspects are accused of sharing images of child sexual abuse through networks such as social media and messenger services, Michael Esser, director of criminal investigations for the Cologne police, said. None of them are suspected of directly abusing any children, according to the current state of the investigation.

Belarusian authorities raid Minsk office of PandaDoc software-maker: CEO

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Belarusian authorities on Wednesday raided the Minsk office of software company PandaDoc and detained its head in a move the company’s chief executive said was politically motivated.

“The department of financial investigations raided our Minsk office,” PandaDoc CEO Mikita Mikado told Reuters. “They keep employees hostage, not letting anyone out.”

Mikado said he believed the company had been raided because of interviews he had given on the political situation in Belarus, where President Alexander Lukashenko has faced weeks of demonstrations after an Aug. 9 election that the opposition said was rigged.

German State-Malware Company FinFisher Raided

The public prosecutor has searched multiple premises of the FinFisher company group in Munich and Romania. They are suspected of having exported state malware without the required authorization. The investigations follow a criminal complaint we filed together with other NGOs.

Law enforcement agencies have conducted a large-scale raid of the German state malware company group FinFisher last week. The customs authorities are investigating the suspicion „that software may have been exported without the required export license from the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control“.

The raids follow our criminal complaint, which we have written and submitted together with the Society for Freedom Rights, Reporters Without Borders and the European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights.

15 objects

A spokesperson of the responsible public prosecutor’s office in Munich comments:

"In co-operation with the Customs Investigation Bureau and supported by further prosecution authorities the public prosecutor’s office Munich I searched 15 objects (business premises and private apartments) around Munich and an enterprise from the entrepreneurial group in Romania on 06.10.2020. The search lasted until the evening of 08.10.2020."

"Investigations are still being conducted against managing directors and employees of FinFisher GmbH and at least two other companies on suspicion of violation of the Foreign Trade and Payments Act. The investigations were started in summer 2019 on the basis of criminal charges."

3 days

FinFisher advertises its state malware as „complete IT intrusion portfolio“, both German federal police and Berlin police have purchased the powerful surveillance tool. Variants of the FinFisher suite have been found in dictatorships like Ethiopia and Bahrain, or more recently again in Egypt.

In summer 2017 a FinFisher sample was discovered in Turkey. The authors of the criminal complaint assume that FinFisher is developed and produced in Munich. If true, the group of companies needs an export license, which the German government has not issued. An export without a license would be a criminal offense.

FinFisher denies these accusations. In a statutory declaration, the CEO states:

"FinFisher GmbH has at no time sold or distributed the FinFisher software in Turkey. Against this background, FinFisher GmbH has at no time violated export regulations of the Federal Republic of Germany or the EU."
