Belarus election: How Nexta channel bypassed news blackout

For days Belarusians have had little information of the unrest filling their streets, with state-run TV making little attempt to report it and other websites and social media offline.

But one source of information that has attracted increasing numbers in this country of 9.5 million people is a channel on the popular Telegram messaging app called Nexta. Pronounced NEKH-ta, it has managed to bypass many of the restrictions.

By Wednesday, opposition websites were online again, but for three nights there has been silence.

Belarusian police search Minsk offices of Russian internet firm Yandex

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Belarusian law enforcement on Thursday searched the Minsk offices of Russian internet giant Yandex, the company said, amid protests in the Belarus capital following a disputed presidential election at the weekend.

Yandex said that the people carrying out the search had presented themselves as representatives of a unit of Belarus’ Interior Ministry.

The company said that the motive for the search had not been disclosed and that no equipment or documents had been seized at its two Minsk offices.

‘Telegram revolution’: App helps drive Belarus protests

MOSCOW (AP) — Every day, like clockwork, to-do lists for those protesting against Belarus’ authoritarian leader appear in the popular Telegram messaging app. They lay out goals, give times and locations of rallies with business-like precision, and offer spirited encouragement.

“Today will be one more important day in the fight for our freedom. Tectonic shifts are happening on all fronts, so it’s important not to slow down,” a message in one of Telegram’s so-called channels read Tuesday. “Morning. Expanding the strike … 11:00. Supporting the Kupala (theater) ... 19:00. Gathering at the Independence Square.”

The app has become an indispensable tool in coordinating the unprecedented mass protests that have rocked Belarus since Aug. 9, when election officials announced President Alexander Lukashenko had won a landslide victory to extend his 26-year rule in a vote widely seen as rigged.

Belarus blocks over 50 news websites amid large protests

MINSK, Belarus (AP) — Authorities in Belarus have blocked more than 50 news media websites reporting on how the country has been shaken by two weeks of protests demanding that authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko resign after 26 years in power.

The Belarusian Association of Journalists reported the shutdowns Saturday, which included sites for the U.S.-funded Radio Liberty and Belsat, a Polish-funded satellite TV channel focusing on neighboring Belarus.

On Friday, the state publishing house stopped printing two top independent newspapers, the Narodnaya Volya and Komsomolskaya Pravda, citing an equipment malfunction.

Tech firms threaten to quit Belarus after crackdown, internet outages

MOSCOW/MINSK (Reuters) - For Belarus’s thriving tech industry, it didn’t matter much that the country’s president referred to the internet as “garbage” and state factories as the engine of economic success. Until now.

The sector could become a casualty of weeks of violent political crisis in the east European country, putting at risk a source of foreign income that is worth 5% of exports.

The staff of international IT companies have joined mass protests and are threatening to quit Belarus after the re-election of President Alexander Lukashenko on August 9 that his opponents say was rigged.

Belarusian authorities raid Minsk office of PandaDoc software-maker: CEO

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Belarusian authorities on Wednesday raided the Minsk office of software company PandaDoc and detained its head in a move the company’s chief executive said was politically motivated.

“The department of financial investigations raided our Minsk office,” PandaDoc CEO Mikita Mikado told Reuters. “They keep employees hostage, not letting anyone out.”

Mikado said he believed the company had been raided because of interviews he had given on the political situation in Belarus, where President Alexander Lukashenko has faced weeks of demonstrations after an Aug. 9 election that the opposition said was rigged.

Google removes Android app that was used to spy on Belarusian protesters

App mimicked a popular anti-government news site and collected location and device owner details.

Google has removed this week an Android app from the Play Store that was used to collect personal information from Belarusians attending anti-government protests.

The app, named NEXTA LIVE (com.moonfair.wlkm), was available for almost three weeks on the official Android Play Store, and was downloaded thousands of times and received hundreds of reviews.

To get installs, NEXT LIVE claimed to be the official Android app for Nexta, an independent Belarusian news agency that gained popularity with anti-Lukashenko protesters after exposing abuses and police brutality during the country's recent anti-government demonstrations.

U.S. Company Faces Backlash After Belarus Uses Its Tech to Block Internet

Sandvine Inc., the U.S. company whose technology helped Belarus block much of the internet during a disputed presidential election last month, promotes its wares with a stark selling point: it can be used to “blacklist” as many as 150 million websites.

The private-equity-backed technology firm demonstrated its equipment to a government security team in Belarus in May, two people with knowledge of the matter said, and its marketing materials boast of the blacklisting capabilities, according to documents reviewed by Bloomberg. The Sandvine equipment is also used to manage and secure networks, and its website blocking feature can prohibit users from accessing content deemed illicit, such as terrorist propaganda or child pornography, according to the documents.

Hackers leak data on 1,000 Belarusian police officers

Security forces will not remain anonymous, anti-Lukashenko protesters say

Anonymous hackers leaked the personal data of 1,000 Belarusian police officers in retaliation for a crackdown on street demonstrations against the veteran president, Alexander Lukashenko, as protesters geared up for another mass rally on Sunday.

“As the arrests continue, we will continue to publish data on a massive scale,” said a statement distributed by the opposition news channel Nexta Live on the messaging app Telegram. “No one will remain anonymous, even under a balaclava.”

The government said it would find and punish those responsible for leaking the data, which was widely distributed on Saturday evening.
