Hong Kong government hires mafia thugs to beat its citizens

Pro-democracy protesters were set upon as they travelled back from a rally in the centre of Hong Kong, where riot police had fired tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters.

Masked men stormed Yuen Long MTR station at about 22:30 local time (14:30 GMT).

Local media said they were targeting people dressed in black - the colour most protesters were wearing.

The men - dressed in white shirts and suspected to be triad gangsters - assaulted pro-democracy protesters and passers-by

HongKong has 1 of the world's highest cop to population ratio. Where were they?

GitHub is censored in Spain as the government attempts to silence Catalan protestors

It appears that Freedom of Association is a uniquely American principle, as – across the globe – in China as well as Europe, governments don't take too kindly to organized dissent, even when that organization takes place in the digital space.

The Spanish government has quietly begun censoring GitHub repositories in response to mounting Catalan protests.

On October 14, the Spanish supreme court sentenced nine pro-independence Catalan politicians to prison sentences ranging from between nine to 13 years – for “sedition” and the roles they played in the Catalan referendum on independence back in 2017.

Following the sentencing, protests have raged through the streets of autonomous Catalonia, in retaliation.

The Catalonia independence movement seeks the independence of Catalonia from Spain and, by extension, the independence of North Catalonia from France and that of other Catalan Countries.

What is Tsunami Democràtic?

One new pro-independence group, Tsunami Democràtic, organizes digitally online and is known for the mass occupation of Barcelona’s El Prat airport by an estimated 10,000 protesters.

The group promotes its activities on Twitter and Telegram where they have hundreds of thousands of followers. It also has a website hosted on Github as well as an encrypted communication app that's also available on Github.

The group have told citizens to download the app as it's the app that will be used for future organization of events, as well as also being used to help protestors evade police detection – something that has been essential to organization in the Hong Kong protests .

The app uses geolocation and end-to-end protocols to make sure that only trusted and verified users have access. Verification takes place through the scanning of a QR code of an already-verified member.

In the region, Android is the most common smartphone operating system. But, since the app isn't available on the Google Play store, where other Android apps are often found, the APK file containing the app needs to be downloaded and manually installed on a phone.

The APK has been, until this point, hosted on the software development platform GitHub.

It's for this reason that the Spanish government has begun to block GitHub in the country, cutting off access to all users. Over the last week, several Spanish internet service providers have blocked access to the service.

Spain is blocking @github to fight against #Catalan activists. This crazy decision can affect a lot of companies and individuals, not even related to #Catalonia . This is an example of how digital activism is surpassing an administration. Cc @WIRED

GitHub is now blocked here in Spain, because Catalan pro-democracy and human rights activists #TsunamiDemocratic uses it to host their mobile app. This is insane in so many ways that I don't quite know where to begin. https://t.co/1dHAfYwAV9

TikTok: Cheerfulness and censorship

Never before has a #platform grown as fast as TikTok. We have gained exclusive insight into its content moderation and are publishing excerpts from its moderation rules: TikTok operates a sophisticated system to identify, #control, #suppress and direct content. The platform can throttle videos of #protests and #demonstrations according to its rules.

No #app has been downloaded as often as TikTok in the past year. The video sharing platform is growing rapidly. In November 2019, TikTok broke the 1 billion-user barrier – faster than any other social network ever before. The video app and its culture are currently so popular with children and young people that even the Tagesschau (the major German public TV News programme) now has its own account there.

However, #research by netzpolitik.org shows that TikTok is currently able to #suppress videos of political protests and demonstrations and additionally determine which content is visible, through a variety of means.

☣️ Exclusive insight into content moderation
For this research, netzpolitik.org spoke to a source at #TikTok, looked at moderation criteria and communications, and experimented with specially created accounts to see how well videos with China-critical content are visible on the platform.

TikToks moderation rules, of which netzpolitik.org was able to see different versions, are remarkably thin and widely interpretable – even for the moderators themselves. The strategy, however, is clear: certain content is given the widest possible reach, while others are systematically suppressed.

The successful platform belongs to the #Chinese #technology company #ByteDance. Already in September, the Guardian reported on leaked documents that detailed how TikTok censored political statements on the #Tiananmen #massacre or the independence of #Tibet. The protests in Hong Kong, which are currently attracting worldwide media attention, are virtually invisible on TikTok between selfies and singalongs, even though the app is available in Hong Kong.

‘Telegram revolution’: App helps drive Belarus protests

MOSCOW (AP) — Every day, like clockwork, to-do lists for those protesting against Belarus’ authoritarian leader appear in the popular Telegram messaging app. They lay out goals, give times and locations of rallies with business-like precision, and offer spirited encouragement.

“Today will be one more important day in the fight for our freedom. Tectonic shifts are happening on all fronts, so it’s important not to slow down,” a message in one of Telegram’s so-called channels read Tuesday. “Morning. Expanding the strike … 11:00. Supporting the Kupala (theater) ... 19:00. Gathering at the Independence Square.”

The app has become an indispensable tool in coordinating the unprecedented mass protests that have rocked Belarus since Aug. 9, when election officials announced President Alexander Lukashenko had won a landslide victory to extend his 26-year rule in a vote widely seen as rigged.

Belarus blocks over 50 news websites amid large protests

MINSK, Belarus (AP) — Authorities in Belarus have blocked more than 50 news media websites reporting on how the country has been shaken by two weeks of protests demanding that authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko resign after 26 years in power.

The Belarusian Association of Journalists reported the shutdowns Saturday, which included sites for the U.S.-funded Radio Liberty and Belsat, a Polish-funded satellite TV channel focusing on neighboring Belarus.

On Friday, the state publishing house stopped printing two top independent newspapers, the Narodnaya Volya and Komsomolskaya Pravda, citing an equipment malfunction.
