TikTok: Cheerfulness and censorship

Never before has a #platform grown as fast as TikTok. We have gained exclusive insight into its content moderation and are publishing excerpts from its moderation rules: TikTok operates a sophisticated system to identify, #control, #suppress and direct content. The platform can throttle videos of #protests and #demonstrations according to its rules.

No #app has been downloaded as often as TikTok in the past year. The video sharing platform is growing rapidly. In November 2019, TikTok broke the 1 billion-user barrier – faster than any other social network ever before. The video app and its culture are currently so popular with children and young people that even the Tagesschau (the major German public TV News programme) now has its own account there.

However, #research by netzpolitik.org shows that TikTok is currently able to #suppress videos of political protests and demonstrations and additionally determine which content is visible, through a variety of means.

☣️ Exclusive insight into content moderation
For this research, netzpolitik.org spoke to a source at #TikTok, looked at moderation criteria and communications, and experimented with specially created accounts to see how well videos with China-critical content are visible on the platform.

TikToks moderation rules, of which netzpolitik.org was able to see different versions, are remarkably thin and widely interpretable – even for the moderators themselves. The strategy, however, is clear: certain content is given the widest possible reach, while others are systematically suppressed.

The successful platform belongs to the #Chinese #technology company #ByteDance. Already in September, the Guardian reported on leaked documents that detailed how TikTok censored political statements on the #Tiananmen #massacre or the independence of #Tibet. The protests in Hong Kong, which are currently attracting worldwide media attention, are virtually invisible on TikTok between selfies and singalongs, even though the app is available in Hong Kong.

What happened at Egypt’s Rabaa Massacre? - 10 years on from the deadly crackdowns

It has been a decade since Egyptian security forces violently dispersed pro-democracy demonstrators at Cairo’s Rabaa Square on 14 August 2013, killing 817 people.

Authorities used armoured military vehicles, tear gas, live ammunition and snipers on tens of thousands of largely peaceful protestors, in what investigations and rights groups like Human Rights Watch concluded was “systematic, premeditated killings”.

To this day, no military or government personnel has been held accountable for the deaths.

We take you through the events of that Rabaa massacre, including why Human Rights Watch said that the actions of Egyptian security forces “likely constituted a crime against humanity”.

🇵🇸 Jenin Jenin | 2002

Directed and co-produced by Palestinian actor and director Mohamed Bakri

The story began in April 2002, when the Israeli #Occupation Forces invaded the Palestinian #refugee camp in Jenin, leveled it to the ground, killed more than seventy people and buried civilians alive in their demolished homes and smoldering buildings.

During #OperationDefensiveShield, the "#IOF" refused to allow journalists, human rights and humanitarian organizations into the camp. Jenin remained sealed for days after the invasion.

Bakri was among the first to enter the camp after the massacre and collect oral testimonies from local residents in Jenin. His Jenin Jenin came to narrate the story of the ruined camp and the #massacre's survivors.

On 23 June 2002, the film's Executive Producer, Iyad Samoudi, was killed in Alyamoun at the end of the filming by Israeli soldiers. Bakri continues to receive death threats. The war on Jenin #Jenin continues to this very day."

🇵🇸 Gaza witnesses bloodiest day yet of Israeli massacres | EuroMed HR Monitor

Geneva - In an escalation of its bloody attacks on the Gaza Strip, Israel has committed mass murder by massacring entire residential blocks, resulting in over 1,000 people killed, wounded, or reported missing, Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor said on Sunday.

Yesterday marked the bloodiest day in the Gaza Strip since Israel began its genocide on 7 October, according to Euro-Med Monitor. This feeds fears of an even more ruthless approach to achieving chilling field and political objectives at the cost of civilians’ lives and property.

🇵🇸 Children of Shatila (1998) | Mai Masri

In September of 1982, the IOF with the help of Lebanese militia massacred more than 2400 Palestinian and Lebanese refugees in the Sabra and Shatilla refugee camps in West Beirut.

More than 350,000 Palestinian refugees live in Lebanon, 15,000 of them in the refugee camp of Shatila in Beirut. Through the eyes of two children who live in this camp, Issa and Farah, this documentary explores the determination to keep family and dreams thriving in a landscape that has been sculpted by war, poverty, grief and displacement.

The filmmaker gives Issa and Farah a small video camera to film their lives and learn how they see their own world. Both children start asking their elders how they felt about leaving Palestine

Mai Masri is a palestinian filmmaker who has directed and produced many award winning films that have been broadcasted on more than 100 television stations around the world.

🇵🇸 Tantura: Film on Nakba massacre of Palestinian village premieres at Bafta | Middle East Eye - 2022

The film depicts how members of the Israeli army’s Alexandroni Brigade attacked the village leading to deaths among the civilian Palestinian population and forcing others to flee.

Palestinians have long said such tactics were used to force them from their historic lands to make way for the establishment of Israel.

Estimates of how many were killed during the massacre exceed 200 people, with one Israeli soldier saying of the death toll: "I didn't count. I can't really know. I had a machine gun with 250 bullets."

Lawyer and #ICJP director, Tayab Ali said that the Tantura episode encapsulates the Palestinian experience during the Nakba and ever since.

“The story of Tantura exemplifies the vast experience of #displacement and loss endured by Palestinians during the #Nakba, but in this film it is told by those that perpetrated it," he said, continuing:

🇵🇸 TANTURA - Documentary Exposing Zionist Crimes (sub English/Arabic) 2022

This documentary film exposes the crimes of the Zionist gangs and exposes the false claims of the foundation of this colonial manufactured entity!

As a reminder, the “#PartitionResolution181” is illegal in terms of content and form. According to the Charter of the United Nations, the powers of the General Assembly authorize its members to vote on recommendations not resolutions. It is not authorized to seize a portion of a country from its indigenous people and grant it to another group of people. The recommendations of the UNGA are not binding to the Security Council!

This documentary was filmed on the lands of the depopulated village of Tantura, Haifa, which was seized by Zionist gang members who attacked the village, seized its homes, eliminated its real name, and substituted with Kibbutz Nachsholim!
