True privacy and security depend on free software

For all of the assurances you might receive from proprietary software companies that they respect your right to privacy, it is impossible to guarantee that your online communications are actually private without free software. Among technical users, it's common knowledge that privacy is dependent on strong encryption. However, the complex connection between software freedom, encryption, and privacy can be a little difficult to explain in the course of our individual activism, and is due for a more in-depth explanation.

Encryption is about keeping secrets secret, whether that means messages between you and a loved one, sensitive documents, or an entire hard drive. It also isn't only for those with something to hide: making strong encryption part of standard practice increases the safety of all those who really do need it by making it a normal thing to do. When your personal information is at stake, it's all the more important that encryption technology be based on free software. Even the most "benign" proprietary programs have a long history of mistreating their users, and a single "snitch" or backdoor in a proprietary encryption program in some cases could cost lives. At the FSF, we advocate for software freedom in any and all situations -- and in some cases, your safety may depend upon it.

This week on The Big Picture Podcast, we speak to Momodou Taal, a Cornell Unveristy scholar forced to flee from #US immigration officers.

Undercover agents belonging to the department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, #ICE for short, have been filmed arresting university students on campuses, in their homes and even in the middle of the street.

Some of those targeted as part of this nationwide sweep have attempted to appeal to the justice system - in Cornell university a group of academics and students launched a legal case against the Trump Administration.

At its centre is the case of Mamodou Taal, a British-Gambian PHD student whose home was then raided by ICE agents in an attempt to arrest him

After failing to get a judge to hear their case, Taal decided instead to leave the United States before he faces the same fate as Mahmoud Khalil and Rumeysa Ozturk.

🇵🇸 Weaponizing DEI: Inside the Trump-Backed Crackdown on Palestine Solidarity

In April 2024, the Heritage Foundation published a follow-up titled “Harvard and DEI: An Expensive Lesson.” It referred to pro-Palestinian student protesters as “pro-Hamas students” while accusing #DEI of discriminating against Jews. The piece also examined how the #Trump administration has suspended $9 billion in federal grants and contracts awarded to Harvard University and local affiliates, including Boston-area hospitals, pending the university’s compliance with specific demands. Chief among them: a crackdown on DEI and alleged campus #antisemitism.

As at Columbia #University—where the Trump administration canceled $400 million in grants—Harvard has also been asked to comply with additional federal demands. These extend beyond limiting pro-Palestinian activity. The administration has requested “full cooperation” with the Department of Homeland Security and other regulatory bodies.

Genocidal Zionists associated with the Revisionist Zionist movement were involved in the creation of the ‘anti-fascist’ movement in this country, as I have revealed in earlier reporting. This particular group then (in 1948) affiliated en bloc with #Irgun, the group responsible for the King David Hotel bombing and which was involved in 1947 and 1948 in terror attacks against #British interests in Palestine and indeed in the UK itself.

🇵🇸UK designates Palestine Action as 'terrorist organization'

British lawmakers voted on Wednesday to designate the #PalestineAction group as a "terrorist organization."

Palestine Action, which identifies as a direct action movement employing disruptive tactics, has repeatedly targeted UK-based companies linked to Israel, most notably the Israeli 'defense firm' Elbit Systems, which it has labeled its “main target.”

The Labour government accused the group of causing millions of pounds in damages through various actions, including at a Thales factory in 2022, an Elbit facility last year, and most recently at a Royal Air Force base in southern England, an incident that prompted the decision to proscribe the group.

The proscription would formally classify Palestine Action as a "terrorist organization" under British law, placing it on the same legal footing as groups like Islamic State and Al-Qaeda, and criminalizing membership or support.

🇵🇸 We were inside the court when #PalestineAction challenged the government's decision to ban them as a terrorist organisation. Declassified UK's Phil Miller said the judge overseeing the case seemed unbothered about the influence of a foreign government and Israeli weapons firms in pushing for the ban.

After a dramatic day at the high court, the judge later ruled that he would not be granting a temporary reprieve to Palestine Action's ban and they will be on the terror list as of midnight tonight.
