Telegram Founder's Arrest Signals Dangerous Times for Online Free Speech | Reclaim The Net
What’s the message being sent to every tech visionary, journalist, or outspoken citizen? Simple: If you don’t play by the new rules, the state will come for you. They’ve got the handcuffs, the secret orders, and, apparently, the global mandate to ensure that dissenting voices are silenced, one way or another.
This isn’t just about Durov or Telegram. This is about the battle lines being drawn between governments that want absolute control and a shrinking pool of platforms still willing to fight for freedom. These are dangerous times for free speech, and if we don’t pay attention, we might just wake up to find it gone for good.

🎉 Telegram has reached 10 million paid subscribers. 10 million people are now enjoying Telegram Premium! 🆕 Today, we’re introducing new features while phasing out a few outdated ones. ⛔️ We’ve removed the People Nearby feature, which was used by less than…
🟡 Durov announces two feature cuts in Telegram, and “development” of censorship .
This will satisfy the French "judicial" bureaucrats.
🔶 The first dismantling is to remove the addition of images in articles published on Telegraph ... Because some people send bad images. This means that articles like these are now impossible to create and even to modify. Obviously, these must have particularly annoyed Westerners. Here they are satisfied.
Similarly, those who embedded images in their Telegram articles by hosting them on Telegraph will have to find alternative hosting.
So we have confirmation: bureaucracy is indeed a communicable disease, French bureaucrats have contaminated the ecosystem of our beloved messaging service. We particularly "like" the extremism implemented in this unjustified decision and the absence of notice that would have allowed adding a notification in the articles to refer readers to the new host.
My Telegraph articles containing an image become impossible to edit, articles in progress cannot be completed.
If the logic continues, we will no longer be able to send images, videos and files on Telegram, because some users publish bad content there. Then it will be the turn of the text? This is really a rotten decision, to remain polite and courteous in this public version.
🔺 The people who linked their Telegraph account to their Telegram account being perfectly identified , could at least have been allowed to continue using Telegraph normally ‼️
This tells us about the future. At any time, an important feature can be destroyed to satisfy French bureaucratic requirements. It's all well and good to take advantage of this to celebrate 10 million premium users, but this is not the time to invest in an ecosystem that is being dismantled .
👉 Well, you will have understood my appreciation of the trend that our messaging is taking under French influence. It was unfortunately predictable, and I expect much worse.
➡️ To respond to this destruction of Telegraph and this desire to push out journalists and bloggers, there is of course the choice of writing articles on LiveJournal, VK or other platforms, there is no lack of competition.
💡 First of all, there is one trick left, the one I had adopted from the beginning, which consists of using a Telegram channel as file hosting . If the channel disappears, the article loses its content, if it is geographically censored, displaying the images requires the use of a VPN.
😐 Eventually, we will end up migrating to other platforms. This is unfortunate, because Telegram and its associated services were technically a superb achievement that we will not find again any time soon with the competition, they were extremely practical to use. We will have to return to the quagmire of separate platforms, poorly designed, not optimized, paying at an exorbitant price, filled with ads, without cross-platform applications, without a set of extremely useful integrated services etc. But it will be done if necessary, very quickly and without going back.
Let us thank Durov for having exceptionally warned of this degradation of the service, all the authors would have searched for hours for the reason of a "technical problem".
🔶 The other dismantling is the officialization of the destruction of the functionality allowing to find other consenting Telegram users nearby. This will now be reserved for companies , because money is not the priority, of course, and it will be supervised .
🔶 In conclusion, he announces that 2024 will mark the transformation of Telegram with the development of censorship . Well, it's off to a good start, indeed, we're even catching up on the delayed semester!
👉 We understand that Paris suggests that he ask for permission to leave the territory ...

Sydney’s Fake Antisemitic Terror Plot: How a Criminal Scam Led to Sweeping Censorship Laws
For a brief moment, Sydney teetered on the edge of full-blown panic. The headlines screamed of a terror plot — an explosives-laden caravan lurking in the city’s semi-rural outskirts, an arson attack on a childcare center near a synagogue. The #Jewish community was shaken and, in response, Premier Chris Minns’ government did what governments do best: moved quickly, passed sweeping draconian hate crime laws, and basked in the glow of their own decisiveness.
Then March arrived and with it an inconvenient fact. The #Australia Federal Police (AFP) and New South Wales Police admitted that the so-called terrorist conspiracy was, in reality, a “criminal con job.” No sleeper cell. No ticking time bomb of extremist violence. Just a group of enterprising criminals staging a threat for their own benefit. The explosives? Staged for maximum impact — but, crucially, without a detonator.

Facial recognition cameras spy on airport passengers in secret Home Office scheme | Telegraph
Facial recognition cameras have secretly been monitoring airport passengers under a scheme backed by the Home Office, documents obtained under freedom of information (FoI) laws reveal
Unpublished Home Office orders reveal airports are required to carry out biometric face scanning of any passenger boarding a domestic flight
They have been in place for at least 15 years, since the last Labour government, but have never been publicly disclosed. The rules require airports with a single departure lounge to capture a facial biometric photo of domestic passengers entering and leaving this area before they board their planes

🇻🇳The Chris Hedges Report: The Secret Military History of the Internet (w/ Yasha Levine) | The Chris Hedges Report
The internet, from its inception, was created to be a tool of mass surveillance.
It was developed first as a #counterinsurgency tool for the #VietnamWar and the rest of the #GlobalSouth, but like many devices of foreign policy naturally it made its way back to #US soil. Yasha Levine, in his book #SurveillanceValley: The Secret Military History of the Internet, chronicles the linear history of the internet’s birth at the #Pentagon to its now ubiquitous use in all aspects of modern life. He joins host Chris Hedges on this episode of The Chris Hedges Report to explain the reality of the internet’s history.
Levine describes the early concept of the internet as “an operating system for the American empire, an information system that could collect all this data and that could provide useful, meaningful information to the managers of the world.”

UK Tribunal Blocks Secret Gov’t Case Against Apple Encryption
A government that demands invisibility in court is one step away from disappearing accountability altogether.
With a necessary reality check, a #UK tribunal has told the government that, no, it cannot hold a secret legal battle against #Apple over #encryption. The Investigatory Powers Tribunal (#IPT), the body meant to oversee the country’s surveillance powers, has dismissed efforts by the Home Office to keep the entire case hidden from public view. And in doing so, it has delivered a quietly important win for press freedom and digital rights. Although, things are far from over.

The significant change will be that this UK user-posted content will not be viewable by any other UK user, but will be visible to other users outside of the UK. Users outside the UK may comment on that content, which the creator will continue to be able to read, delete, block, reply and flag. Users outside the UK may share UK-user produced content to other users outside of the UK as normal. Statewatch | UK: Ministry of Justice secretly developing ‘murder prediction’ system

The Ministry of Justice is developing a project that uses data from hundreds of thousands of people, including victims and witnesses of crime to build this tool - research by #Statewatch reveals.

We know that algorithms can get it wrong, that #AI can get it wrong, and that police themselves can get it wrong, even when crimes have already taken place – they must not be allowed to use pervasive technology to target innocent people who have not committed any crime.”

New York Bill Would Force Age ID Checks at the Device Level – Reclaim The Net
New York just proposed the most invasive state-level age verification bill the US has seen. Senate Bill S08102 would extend age verification requirements down to the device itself: internet-connected devices, operating system providers, and app stores would all be required to implement what the bill calls “age assurance” before users can access their own hardware and software ecosystems.
We obtained a copy of the bill for you here.
This is more than a social media platform asking for your birthdate. It’s your phone, your laptop, your operating system demanding proof of who you are before letting you use them normally.
The bill defines “age assurance” as “any method that can reasonably determine the age category of a user, using methods that reasonably prevent against circumvention.”

With iOS 26.4, #Apple has turned every iPhone in the UK into an identity checkpoint. The update, released March 24, requires all UK users to confirm they’re 18 or older before accessing certain features and services on their Apple Account.

The infrastructure being built is more of a problem than that framing suggests.
Apple has, without warning, placed a gatekeeper on the devices of 35 million UK users who paid good money for full-featured smartphones and now find themselves holding something closer to a supervised children’s tablet.

🇲🇽Mexico Speeds Up Biometric ID Rollout | Reclaim the Net
Mexico’s government wants you to believe that handing over your fingerprints, iris scans, and facial data is voluntary. President Claudia Sheinbaum has said so publicly.
But by July 2026, every one of the country’s roughly 130 million mobile phone lines must be linked to a biometric national ID, and unregistered numbers get suspended on July 1.
Refuse the biometric credential and lose your phone.
The CURP Biométrica upgrades Mexico’s existing population registry code, the Clave Única de Registro de Población, from an 18-character alphanumeric string into something far more personal. The updated system captures face, fingerprint, and iris biometrics, packages them with a QR code and digital signature, and produces what amounts to a mobile-readable identity document tied to your body.
