DHS Obtained Protesters' Encrypted Messages, Used Them To Craft 'Intelligence' Reports

The more the DHS inserts itself into the ongoing civil unrest, the more unrestful it gets. President Trump sent his federal forces to Portland, Oregon -- the first of many "democrat" cities the president feels are too violent/unrestful -- to protect federal buildings from violent graffiti outbursts or whatever. When the DHS arrived -- represented by the CBP, ICE, US Marshals, and other federal law enforcement -- it announced its arrival with secret police tactics straight out of the Gestapo playbook.

Google removes Android app that was used to spy on Belarusian protesters

App mimicked a popular anti-government news site and collected location and device owner details.

Google has removed this week an Android app from the Play Store that was used to collect personal information from Belarusians attending anti-government protests.

The app, named NEXTA LIVE (com.moonfair.wlkm), was available for almost three weeks on the official Android Play Store, and was downloaded thousands of times and received hundreds of reviews.

To get installs, NEXT LIVE claimed to be the official Android app for Nexta, an independent Belarusian news agency that gained popularity with anti-Lukashenko protesters after exposing abuses and police brutality during the country's recent anti-government demonstrations.

The FBI Team Sent to ‘Exploit’ Protesters’ Phones in Portland

https://www.nybooks.com/daily/2020/10/08/the-fbi-team-sent-to-exploit-protesters-phones-in-portland

The FBI’s Washington, D.C., headquarters sent agents from its “Fly Team,” an elite counterterrorism unit, to Portland this summer during the second weekend in July. Their task was to interview arrested protesters and carry out the “initial exploitation of phones, or other communication devices,” according to FBI emails obtained through a public records request. It is unclear whether the Fly Team operation extended either past that weekend or beyond Portland, but the emails suggest that the FBI has been using counterterrorism tools and powers to map left-wing protest networks just months before an election whose result is likely to be delayed, if not challenged.

In Moscow, 'Big Brother' is watching and recognising protesters

Officials hailed Moscow's massive facial recognition camera network as a benign aid to residents that would enforce quarantine restrictions, catch criminals and even let them pay subway fares.

Now it's being deployed to crush dissent against President Vladimir Putin.

Police tapped the surveillance system to identify and detain dozens of people who attended last week's protests in the Russian capital in support of jailed Kremlin foe Alexei Navalny.

More than 50 were picked up over the following days, including several journalists, according to OVD-Info, an independent human rights monitoring group that gathers information on detentions.

Ms Anna Borzenko, 65, was held overnight in a cell after going to police when she learned officers had been to her apartment seeking to question her.

"I was an experiment in the development of a total surveillance system," she said. "This system will be more terrifying when it is established."

Use of the technology adds to risks facing Russians who voice opposition to Mr Putin as the Kremlin embarks on the most far-reaching crackdown in years.
