College recruitment database leaking nearly 1 million students’ GPAs, SAT scores, IDs, and other personal data

We recently discovered an unsecured Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service) bucket, or database, containing nearly 1 million records of sensitive high school student academic information.

Included in this unsecured bucket are GPA scores, ACT, SAT, and PSAT scores, unofficial transcripts, student IDs, and students’ and parents’ names, email addresses, home addresses, phone numbers and more.

The unsecured bucket seems to belong to CaptainU, an online platform that purports to help connect student athletes and colleges or universities that are interested in recruiting them for their athletic programs. Because of that, the bucket also contains pictures and videos of students’ athletic achievements, messages from students to coaches, and other recruitment materials.

16-Year-Old Arrested for Cyberattacks on School's Online Learning Systems

The unidentified 16-year-old is a Miami-Dade public school student who admitted to eight DDoS attacks meant to take down school district networks.

A high school junior was arrested this morning for allegedly launching a cyber attack on the web-based systems used by their Florida school district for online learning.

The unidentified 16-year-old attends South Miami Senior High School, part of the Miami-Dade public school district. The student admitted to orchestrating eight DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) cyber attacks meant to take down school district networks, including the web architecture propping up My School Online. The district has experienced more than a dozen cyber attacks since the 2020-2021 school year started.

The Right to Repair could help address a critical shortage in school computers

Buying a refurbished computer can save money and cut waste. It might also be a key strategy in addressing the digital divide

In many places across the United States, school has begun, with much of that schooling actually remote learning. We’ve found out we have a big problem: There are not enough computers for every student stuck at home because of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to an AP investigation, America is some 5 million laptops short of what we need.

Whether or not you or your child can access a computer and the internet could mean the difference between getting an education this fall, or not. The stakes have perhaps never been higher for equitable computer access in the U.S. But thanks to disruptions in the supply chain, even though schools and businesses have ordered new computers, they aren’t showing up.

Laptops given to British schools came preloaded with malware and talked to Russia when booted

Department for Education says: 'We believe this is not widespread'

A shipment of laptops supplied to British schools by the Department for Education to help kids learn under lockdown came preloaded with malware, The Register can reveal.

The affected laptops, distributed to schools under the UK government's Get Help With Technology (GHWT) scheme, which started last year, came bundled with the Gamarue nasty – an old remote access worm from the 2010s.

The Register understands that a batch of 23,000 computers, the GeoBook 1E running Windows 10, made by Shenzhen-headquartered Tactus Group, contained the units that were loaded with malware. A spokesperson for the manufacturer was not available for comment.

John Taylor #Gatto: The Underground History of American #Education.

https://schoolsucksproject.com/john-taylor-gatto/

Press PLAY to begin your journey. This video series is based on John Taylor Gatto's book, and arranged and edited by Brett Veinotte

Whether you're just now learning about John Taylor Gatto's work or well versed in it, this video series is a powerful and sharable resource. These videos consist of well-chosen excerpts from The Underground History of American Education, because they strike the root of the issues we see in American schools today.

The series includes eye opening accounts of Gatto's time as a school teacher, while elucidating the not-so-well-known history of modern schooling in America. Today's school critics and reformers stand on Gatto's shoulders, since it was Gatto who spent untold hours scouring through dry and bland writings of the architects of modern schooling to create this digestible and entertaining read. This is one of many books he wrote on the problems and history of compulsory schooling.

This playlist offers an ideal entry point into the work of John Taylor Gatto. It will also provide clarity for those already in the trenches of alternative education. This knowledge is of absolute necessity for anyone considering their own education or the education of their children.

🇵🇸 Dozens killed as Israeli forces strike al-Fakhoora School in northern Gaza | Al Jazeera

Israeli air raids have killed dozens people at the al-Fakhoora #School, run by the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees (#UNRWA), in #Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza.

At least 50 people have been killed in the bombing, the Palestinian ministry of health official said on Saturday

Reminder in 2009 : The al-Fakhura school incident was an Israeli military strike that took place during the Gaza War on 6 January 2009 near a United Nations-run school in the Jabalia Camp in the Gaza Strip. According to UN and several non-governmental organizations (NGOs), more than 40 people were killed, most of them civilians.

Israel’s horrific targeting of shelter centres aims to massacre, forcibly displace Palestinians | EMHRM

The Israeli army's horrific targeting of shelter centres housing thousands of displaced Palestinians in various areas of the Gaza Strip was strongly condemned by Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, which warned of Israel’s intent to ethnically cleanse the Strip.

We stated that over the past 48 hours, Israel has intensified its air and artillery attacks against shelter centres—particularly #UN-run schools—which may amount to war crimes and serious violations of international humanitarian law.

The rights organisation cited the intensive bombing of #AlFakhoura #School in the northern #Jabalia camp as well as Tal Al-Zaatar and Abu Hussein schools in the town of Beit Lahia town, also located in northern #Gaza, which followed the targeting of two Gaza City schools (Al-Falah and Al-Mawhibin). These school attacks have resulted in 580 deaths, plus the injury of hundreds more.

🇵🇸 Footage shows bodies piled up after Israeli attack on Gaza school

Exclusive video and images obtained by Al Jazeera this morning show bodies piled up inside the Shadia Abu Ghazala School in the al-Faluja area, west of the Jabalia refugee camp in the northern Gaza Strip.

Witnesses said a number of people including women, #children and babies were killed execution-style by Israeli forces while sheltering inside the #school.

“The Israeli soldiers came in and opened fire on them,” a woman at the scene said.  “They took all men, then entered classrooms and opened fire on a woman and all the children with her.”

The woman said there were newborn children among them. “The Israeli soldiers executed those innocent families at point blank,” she added.

Al Jazeera's Hani Mahmoud is in southern Gaza in Rafah for the latest developments.

🇵🇸 Testimonies from Gaza : Randa Contemplates Her Uncertain Future | UNRWA

"I lost 11 people of my family, but I don’t have time to think of them. You can’t just think of them because now you have to think of something more important, which is life basics."  Randa (17) was in her final year in high school, preparing for her Tawjihi (end-of-school) exams, preparing for  college abroad. Now she contemplates her uncertain future, questioning whether, if she survives, she'll find the strength to dream again.
