FBI warns about snoopy smart TVs spying on you

An FBI branch office warns
smart TV users that they can be gateways for hackers to come into your home. Meanwhile, the smart TV OEMs are already spying on you

A recent #FBI #report warned #smart #TV users that #hackers can also take control of your unsecured TV. "At the low end of the risk spectrum, they can change channels, play with the volume, and show your kids inappropriate videos. In a worst-case scenario, they can turn on your bedroom TV's camera and microphone and silently #cyberstalk you," explained the FBI.

The risk isn't new. A few years ago, smart TVs from #LG, #Samsung, and #Vizio were #spying and #reporting on your viewing habits to their #manufacturers.

Today, the FBI is warning that "TV manufacturers and #app #developers may be listening and watching you." It added, "[A] television can also be a gateway for hackers to come into your home. A bad cyber actor may not be able to access your locked-down computer directly, but it is possible that your unsecured TV can give him or her an easy way in the #backdoor through your #router."

That's true, but while there have been relatively few cases of hackers invading homes via their smart TVs, it's only a matter of time until they're watching and listening to you.

Now Google wants you to control devices with your hoodie

Everything can be smarter, and fashion is no exception.

In the quest to make computers ever-more pervasive, and invisible, Google's AI research team has now unveiled a new way to weave technology directly into our garments. The so-called "e-textile" concept could let users control electronic devices through a flick or a twist of their hoodie strings.

The team's work focused on cords, specifically because strings are a popular fashion staple but also constitute an intuitive way to control consumer devices. The smart cord developed by the researchers can recognize six types of operation: twisting, flicking, sliding, pinching, grabbing and patting. There is a bonus: because users can perform some of these gestures, such as flicking, at different speeds and in different directions, there is actually an even greater variety of actions that the technology can respond to.

Google "accidentally" enables Home smart speakers to listen in to everyday house sounds

Users have received notifications when their Google Home speakers hear smoke alarms or breaking glass

Google "accidentally" enabled a feature for Google Home users which let the smart speaker listen to the sounds of objects in your house.

A user on Reddit spotted a notification on his phone from his smart speaker which alerted him to the fact his smoke alarm was going off while he was cooking.

Usually, Google Home devices only respond to its active โ€˜wake wordsโ€™ โ€“ such as โ€œOk, Googleโ€ or โ€œHey, Googleโ€ โ€“ but in this instance the speaker was listening out to a passive sound and make โ€œmy dumb smoke detectors smart,โ€ the Reddit user wrote.

Google's secret home security superpower: Your smart speaker with its always-on mics

Google speakers are listening to more than just voice commands. Using them for home security could supercharge Google's $450 million ADT deal.

Last week, Reddit user Brazedowl received a curious notification on his phone: Google was telling him that a smoke detector in his home had gone off. Brazedowl, a teacher from North Carolina who goes by Drew in real life, knew about the smoke alarm โ€” he was at home himself and had just fried some sausages in his kitchen. But up until that moment, he had no idea that his smart speaker was able to detect such events. "Google just made my dumb smoke detectors smart," he wrote on Reddit. "Pretty rad."

A Google spokesperson told Protocol that the feature was accidentally enabled for some users through a recent software update and has since been rolled back. But in light of Monday's news that Google invested $450 million โ€” acquiring a 6.6% stake โ€” in home security provider ADT, it may be a sign of things to come for Google, as it hints at the company's secret home security superpower: millions of smart speakers already in people's homes.

In China, smart locks are being used to track citizens and enforce lockdowns

Proprietary "
smart" devices are an absolute nightmare. If users can't audit the code they don't know what they are doing and the device works for the tech company selling it rather than the user.

On a really basic level think about the information someone can infer just by looking at data from devices like this:

Your door is opened and locked at 7:30 am everyday and then reopened and unlocked at 6:30 pm but never during the hours in between? Chances are you ....

How smart devices are exploited for domestic abuse

The number of domestic abuse cases has increased dramatically since the UK's Covid lockdown - and tech has played a role.

Smart speakers, tracking apps and key-logging software are among products that have made it easier for perpetrators to maintain control of victims and continue abuse.

Domestic-violence charity Refuge says more than 70% of those it provides support to have reported tech-related abuse within a relationship.

Two people who experienced abuse during the pandemic shared their stories with BBC Click.

They asked to remain anonymous for their own safety.

"When he left the house, that's when I started to see that he was using the Ring doorbell camera to track me," says Kate, who is using a pseudonym. She is referring to Amazon's internet-connected security device. It triggers alerts when it detects motion in front of a home and allows live footage or recordings to be watched from afar.

"I could take the battery out of it if I wanted to, but I didn't feel like I could because he would say to me, 'You're compromising our children's safety'.

"I was worried that he would go to the police and try and suggest that I'm a bad mother."

VICE Documentary on China's dystopic 'Skynet' system.

Skynet is an AI facial recognition network and part of the CCP's mass surveillance panopticon.

It was developed through public-private partnerships. Megvii, the company featured in this documentary, created China's first facial recognition system back in 2012.

When globalists in the West say they want to create "Smart Cities," this is what they mean.
