Robert knew now there was no other option.

It was time to call one of his most trustworthy friends. But he gripped his phone harder. Is this right?

He gazed right through his transparent phone. And then he focussed back to read the number on the diary, one that he knew since the start of time. Over two decades, this phone number was the only familiarity, a friendship that knew no limits.

Robert gasped. Dialled the number and stood up.

“Privet,” said Robert.

A very sensual and bold, fulfilling yet surprised female voice answered on the other end

“Robert?”

“Yes Val,”

“Hmmm,”

They both took a short pause.

“Bad timing?”

“Spare me the formalities Robert,” she said aggressively.

“I’m in a sort of a pickle.”

“Why not? You call me after three years.”

“Angry?”

“That’s not what you want to ask.” Her voice felt like the coldest winters the Siberia had to offer.

Robert refused to be defeated, he uttered, “I would rather—”

“Three years no contact. You abandoned your last job. I had to take responsibility!” She was pretty damn loud.

“You know what went down there,” he said while he combed through his long hair with his fingers.

“What else do you expect me to do?” she raised her voice a little.

“Nobody messes around with the Elites.”

“OK. What do I owe this phone call then?”

“You know what? I shouldn’t have called you.”

“STOP,” she said loudly. “You’d never call me unless you were in a situation.”

Robert gasped again. He held the papers from the letter that had the names, photographs and addresses of the five men appended with only the photograph of the sixth so called ‘victim’.

“Yurina was kidnapped…”

“What?”

“They were five Rebels hitting some spy and Yurina happened to pass by. They were about to kill her as she was the live witness. But I managed to save her. You know how ridiculous she is.”

“And then?”

“I managed to kill four but the fifth one killed himself with poison while I was interrogating him.”

“What do you need me for now?”

“The Chief,” he said. “Joseph wants me to find the real names and locations of those spiritless.”

“This is hilarious!” She shouted. “What am I to you Robert?”

“The person I trust the most.”

“Is this some kind of a stupid game to you?”

“All my contacts are lost after the Mafia came back. I don’t have a magic stick to just enchant and get myself some wood.”

“Yes you do, but you used it to fuck your way through the military without ever thinking about me.” The look on her face was really messed up and disappointed.

“The Elites had a sniff on this. They’re going to hit us hard if I don’t get a thing. Both the Chief and I will be on their aim if we don’t provide a report.” Robert clenched his fist tightly and dabbed his forehead with it.

“What do the Elites have to so with all this?”

“They always talk about some huge breach. In April all in Black one will be roaming everywhere like ants. And I don’t want to lose the influence on the MPCG.”

“I don’t do the old jobs anymore Robert.”

“Val, I know you will.”

“Suka! (Bitch)” she said. For Robert, her voice, even if it was angry and disappointed, was still as sweet and reassuring as it was a decade and a half ago.

The two waited for each other to reply on the phone for a few moments. Valentina was holding on to an old photograph.

“Do you remember our days Val?”

Valentina took a few heavy breaths.

“Don’t do this!” she said loudly.

“VALENTINA! PLEASE…”

This almost swayed Valentina. The last word pierced her like a bayonet. This was the first time. Why me? Especially after everything that happened between us. She started feeling breathless and nervousness took over her.

“I’ll think about it,” saying this she hung up the phone.

Robert also reached out to a huge box under his bed. It had all the military uniforms wrapped in transparent sheets. And under all that another box. The box had a handful of shielded physical drives. And a photograph.

It was the same one.

The photograph with the two standing close together.

Smiling without a worry in the world.
