Military service is compulsory for men in Iran. Young men have to spend two trying years on military bases for conscription, to receive a certificate. Otherwise, they are not entitled to many social services and rights, including getting a passport.
Ali Abbasi was one of those men who completed his service but couldn't celebrate when his certificate arrived. He had been fatally shot by the security forces at an anti-regime rally in the city of Samirom a few days earlier.
“Wake up dear and see what has come for you,” Ali’s mother posted on Instagram, with a picture of his conscription certificate.
