🔥 Common Weaknesses in Writing Task 1 🔥

1️⃣ Starting too quickly: Many make the mistake of immediately beginning their writing task as soon as they see the graph, only to realize that they have cited unneeded data.

🌟Tip: Take a second and figure out what you’re going to say.

2️⃣ Not knowing what types of graphs might appear: A common tendency for test-takers is to practice one type of graph and think task 1 is easy. This can spell doom. Acquaint yourself with all the types of graphs.

🌟Tip: Lists of Task 1 question types are discussed in detail in the session. Pay close attention!

3️⃣ Paraphrasing badly: Practice paraphrasing the question. You do not need to reproduce each detail. A one or a two-sentence introduction is quite often more than enough.

🌟Tip: Understand which information is important and which is not.

4️⃣ Not practicing comparisons: You are going to need to compare different things on task 1. Take some time and find real world examples of comparisons. What expressions do they use? What could you find useful?

🌟Tip: There is no need to use ‘technical’ vocabulary or jargon in Task 1.

5️⃣ Not using the passive voice well: Passive voice is generally considered to be bad style, but it can be very useful when describing processes (not graphs). Instead of “the meat is ground in a machine” you could say “the meat is put into a grinder”.

🌟Tip: Look at sample responses and figure out the different ways of paraphrasing sentences.
